Re: 89 camero runs good cold then dies after getting hot
try to help you with your camAro here....
Codes, each will flash 3x. so your 12 = Flash [pause] flash, flash [pause] flash [pause] flash, flash [pause] flash [pause] flash, flash[pause].........next code or back to 12. Now, the wires to the fan are cut? So you have no fan?? This may be a problem as part of the self check diagnostic mode is to check fan operation, so as soon as you ground the aldl (a to b, key off then roll to run, not start) the fan should kick on. If it doesn't then the ECM might not enter diagnostic mode. complete loss of all power is a baked/cracked power supply or ground wire. H |

Re: 89 camero runs good cold then dies after getting hot
hey thanks for the info i still havent been able to check the codes as the car is in my churches parking lot right now and im working so many hour just dont have time but maybe this sunday i cann do it as for the fan the wires where cut but they had been repaid.but i was also thinking if maybe it got wired back wards? this my be a dumb ? but which direction should the fan spen clock wise or counter ? i love to work on cars but some times i make it worse then it was before lol lol this car was suppose to be a car that me and my son was going to take our time on and fix up togeather but him being off to collage in the fall he wants to have it ready by then it being a t-top and black it is really a sweet car it just speaks to u when u look at it its got plenty of power when its running good it only has 67,000 on it so it should be a strong motor we put a different trany in it as revers was totally gone in it. im trying not to spend much more at the repair shop so any thing u might think of would be a great help ill get back to u when i get the codes iv also been checking out the other camero diagnosis on here and have gotten so good tips. now the 89 is that a tpi or a tbi and how could u tell the difference an other dumb ? but u know i got to ask

Re: 89 camero runs good cold then dies after getting hot
I bet it is some vital electrical part of the car that is getting hot and shutting down. I know that this is usually what ignition modules do, but since the power is going out to everything it sounds like it is something even more vital to the car. Hate to say it but it could be the ECM.

Is the battery relatively new? If not, try replacing that. If that isn't the case, could be your alternator is on it's way out. Unless of course that's already been replaced as well.

Re: 89 camero runs good cold then dies after getting hot
Well, before we start shotgunning parts at it, check the wiring first, especially at the starter, the big fat positive battery feed. You may want to disconnect the battery while taking a gander at it.
I didn't throw the ICM suggestion out ther becasue of loss of ALL power. As for the fan wiring, should be white to white (+), black to black (-). As for direction, I believe (not 100%) it's a clockwise if you were looking at it from the engine side. Stinks you're kid can't help you with the car, I know my youngest is rearing to get his hands on mine when I tear it down shortly. Anyway, definately check for codes, and really check out the main battery cables, starter and alternator wiring and post back. Note, if it's over the weeknd, I won't get you til Monday. Oh, you REALLY need to utilize the spellcheck my friend ![]() |

well i got to work on the 89 today. it went perty good got the codes and this is what i got.code 13,33.42. code 13 was oxygen sensor, code 33 maf sensor, code 42 electronic sparktiming.so after i did that i checked the fan to see if it would come when the ac was turned on and it did so i knew it was working. so we cleared the codes and then we run the car for a bit and it kinda started to act up like before so we parked it thinking ok lets just fix all the codes that we got.well as i was looking around i notised this sensor just kinda laying loss on the right side of the motor up buy the firewall just right of the brake fluid holder. and i look and there was another sensor fastend to the firewall unhooked so we took the wires from the one that was loss and connected them to the one one the firewall and u know the car ran so much better it would go up to about 240 and then drop then back up and drop so i stoped to see if the fan was kicking on and it was. the car didnt die or loss power or over heat.so we parked the car tell we can get the o2 sensor fixed and when tryed to start the car and it had no power so i messed with cable and it got power so we are going to change the cable to starter i wanted to say ty for all the help u gave me i think we got it so it will run good soon. well let u know after we get things togeather how it goes ty again and one ? thou not sure what sensor i plug back in there seems to be 2 up on the firewall just right of the brake fluid resivor it was the square one i plug in there is also a round shaped one next to it if u know what these are could please let me know ty again shelbberz

Re: 89 camero runs good cold then dies after getting hot
On the sid eof the motor, it should be the O2 and would explain why it wasn't working. It should go straight down in to the exhaust. Other wise it owuld the SPak timing connector for the ECM, and explain the 42. But, that's on the the other side of the motor.
