Gta/a610
The Renault Alpine GTA was produced from 84' to 95' they were powered by a peugeot/renault/volvo V6 situated in the tail. With a stiff lightwieght chassis and a willing engine wich produced 250hp in turbo form the GTA series was gunning for 911 territory. Unfortunately, Renault was unable to coax many buyers away from Porsche.....I want one.

The Alpine almost came to the US. Renault designed a US-spec car and brought it to the US for shows. They even advertised for it and produced brochures (I have one).
Where the Euro-spec Alpine had exposed Euro-style headlights, the American version had the pop-up lights shown in the picture above. I believe this version was adapted to the European version later. The American Alpine died when Chrysler bought AMC. Chrysler didn't want the Alpine to compete with the Chrysler/Maserati TC (they were similarly priced). |

My Alpine
The predecessor to the A610, the A310, was brought to the US by a few independent dealers. One in Colorado had one of their cars featured in a Motor Trend article back in the mid-80's. A dealer here in Dallas, Alpine Imports, brought in a couple of A310's and tried to sell the A610 but went out of business under "suspicious" circumstances.
I acquired one of the A310's after the dealership went belly up, in May '87, and kept it until August '97. It was quite a thrilling car to drive and never failed to draw a crowd, moreso than any other car I've owned (and I've had a few oddities). Mechanically it wasn't too bad, as most engine parts could be gotten from any Volvo dealer, brake pads were Peugeot, etc. Unfortunately, the bright red color did nothing to keep Texas drivers from running into it and, since there were no dealers in the US, repairs were quite difficult. Body parts had to be ordered from select dealers in France and the language barrier made that challenging, not to mention monetary exchange, customs, etc. Then finding a body shop to do major fiberglass work on a car they had no specs for... All in all it was a great experience - all the problems were worth it. |

there is an car reviewer/legend here in Iceland who wrote for the only car magazine here for decades, the magazine had the clever name "the car".
He claimed in one of his many articles that he only twice really wanted the car he was testing. When he was invited to review cars for manufacturers they normally had something at the end of their presentations to pamper reporters. That was especially true with Fiat, Renault, Saab and Opel. Once at Renault in 1993, had quite the number of Alpines. He got the opportunity to try an 1988 V6 Alpine and to make a long story short the skies opened. He described it as a very practical megasports car, unlike Porsche, (which was his favorite up to that point) really was“nt practical, let alone the price difference between them. He is currently looking for a A610 preferably 1996 model but no luck so far. |

Re: Gta/a610
Dragging out old threads here.
I am new to AF and am just looking around at what's here. There are some good threads and great info. Thought I'd add a bit for interests sake. This is a great Alpine Renault site. http://www.renaultalpineownersclub.com/ Out of interst also. Australia is fast becoming the second home for many un-loved Alpines. Over the past 18 months there have been about 6 GTAs imported into Australia. 2 V6 models and 4 or more turbos. I almost imported one myself last October, but it will have to wait for a few years now. They are a great car and really have to be experienced to be fully appreciated. The level of grip even with the unusual design of rear engine with engine behind the rear axel is great. |
