Unhappy Alt Belt Torn up...

I finally got around to working on my alternator belt. The things been squealing since about 4 weeks after I put the UDP on. The voltage guage has also been reading kind of low lately.

I loosen the alternator, take off the other belt, then pull the off the alternator belt. The belt is torn up badly. You know how the ridges are so it locks onto the pulleys? The one closest to the engine was almost totally seperate from the rest of the belt.. I wish I had a pic of it. It was almost like having 2 belts on the pulleys.

It was also chewed up on the edges. It looks like strands of it just hanging.

So I bought a new belt and installed it. There was no squeak, and then it rained yesterday badly... so you know how that goes. This morning when moving the car, it was squeaking again. I don't think it would still be wet or moist. It was kinda cold, so maybe it wasn't dry. Any ideas? I've had more problems with this belt than anything. Thanks

Re: Alt Belt Torn up...

Pulley could be worn, or misaligned.

Re: Alt Belt Torn up...

USE OEM !!!

Spend the $13 at the dealership.

I went through 2 belts from Napa and Champion and both of them did just what you described... If you look at an OEM and an other you will see a difference in the ribs in the belt....OEM matches your pulley where the others do not... slight difference makes a big difference.

After getting an OEM I had no problems after that.

Re: Alt Belt Torn up...

The belt was from autozone. Plain ole-belt. Nothing special about it. The ribs match perfectly with these. I'll take it off again and check it all over again. Is there anything I should put on the pulley (besides dressing) beofre I put the belt on so it's all good? Anything? Thanks

NO belt dressing...I tried that also and it helped for about 5 minutes....then squeel again... I also had alot of belt dust around that whole area from the NON OEM belts....

And if you don't get OEM from the dealership..... your loss... live n learn...

When I said about the ribs... yes they match up with the pulley as for alignment BUT they aren't a perfect match like OEM.....

I'd bet damn good money on if you spent the $13 or so bucks on OEM (not like you haven't spent more on mods) you won't have anymore probs...

I'm just passing on my experience hoping to save you the time n money...

Re: Alt Belt Torn up...

I dont use dressing. I was asking if there was anything to put on the pulleys and belts before putting them on to help. I worded that wrong.
