2003 Venture All Interior Backlighting is Out
Whenever the vehicle senses that it is getting dark outside, the car turns on the headlights and the instrument panel backlighting. On my car, this includes the sterring wheel backlighting, overhead backlighting and the center console backlighting. This also includes the radio display. Currently, at dark all of these lights do not come on and the radio display turns off. All of these lights are controlled by the headlight dimmer switch. Any light controlled by the dimmer switch will not come on.
I first attacked the fuses and all were fine inside and under the hood. I assumed it was the headlight switch and a new replacement did not solve the problem. It appears that the car wiring connector is the problem. I have jumped terminals and have gotten the lights to come on. There appears to be two circuits with terminals that are supplied dimmer controlled voltage. I can get them to come on by jumping power from the either orange terminal to either one of the two circuits and it's lights work fine. I then try to put the old or new headlight switch back on the connector and they will work sometimes (even dim via the dimmer dial) and then stop working when I try to install the switch back into the dash. I have played with all of the wires on the back of the connector and can not get the lights to come on or off at all with any movement. Then I will try to test a jumper again and they will work and continue to work and even with the switch installed onto the connector but stop for no apparent reason or significant movement. Does anyone know how to service the headlght connector (car side) which is ID in the service manual on page 8-261 as Connector 1205993 / 17-Way F Metri-Pack Mixed Series (BLK). It appears that I am not getting good contact with the headlight switch or the crimps inside the connector are bad. I am lost on how to access terminals on this type of connector since pushing and moveing them appear to have no direct effect. Or maybe I am missing something on how the system works and something else is in play here that I am missing? It is very hard to drive at night without backlighting of the instruments (speed) and no radio display. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Steve |
