The number indicates the length, I'd say it's important to get the right one. Order from your dealership.
As for replacing them, I pulled my fan shroud out and removed the fan, makes it a lot easier, but I'm told it can be done without doing so. The 2 longer belts are held by tensioners, the bolt through each tensioner hold everything in place, and a bolt leading down to the tensioner is what adjusts them. The alternator belt has the locking bolt and adjusting bolt on its bracket. |

Re: any one have trouble changing belts? looks hard to reach
You probably don't want to go to all the trouble. You might be able to get the 4 nuts holding the fan on while the shroud is in place, but it won't be fun and is really best done with the shroud removed. Plus it's real easy to drop the nuts that hold the fan on and they end up in places that are hard to see and get to, even with the shroud removed. But, if you're game (and it's a real good time to clean out your radiator while you're at it), here's how:
Reassembly is pretty much the exact opposite of assembly. The shroud will go in about as smoothly as it came out, a little shoving may be needed, watch for snags. Also be sure to rinse off any coolant that spills when you re-attach the hose (especially the belts) and top off the coolant when you're done. Good luck, Brent Schlud, this might be a good one to move to the how-to section in a bit... |

All in all I'm glad I went to the trouble, a good experience and my radiator really did need a good cleaning. Brent |

Re: any one have trouble changing belts? looks hard to reach
I don't know why you guys are removing all that stuff, I changed my belts last night and did not even touch the fan or the shroud, the belts can fit over the fan you just have to fit it of a few blades at a time, yes i removed the skid plate, but man I don't do all that work. By the way our xterra is a V6 if that makes a difference.
By the way i saw a question about the alternator belt.....you don't have to fit it over the fan, just do all the work on that belt from under the car, you can fit it on the crank pulley and the alternator. |
