Headliner

Hi,

I have headliner renewal under the work in our gn t-top. Almost everything is ok before pulling the headliner out, but the panel over the back window is still in its`place.

Is there some method to pull the panel out without breaking the clips including the panel fastening?

Re: Headliner

Those sail panel clips in a lot of GM cars are a difficult one. The last I checked, they were still available since they break almost every time. The temperature of the roof probably stresses them severely.

Thanks for your answer!

Yes, I know what the age and temperature makes to the rubber and plastic.

So, i will look for the company, who has the new clips. I already have some, for instance Highway stars part number 20061050 R.

Re: Headliner

Hi, now is the headliner out and cleaned from the old foam. but, should I use some solvent to clean out the remaining some tacky stuff from the headliner body, so that the new fabric with new glue sticks on to the bottom material?

Re: Headliner

I've used a moderate (not really stiff) wire brush to gently remove the majority of the foam stuck to the fiberglass backer, then spray on the adhesive and allow it to tack off. The residue of the old foam hasn't presented a problem on those that I have done. I would suspect any solvent would affect the compressed glass mat and could create a disaster.

After that, positioning is critical because you really only get one shot at dropping the new material into position.

Re: Headliner

Thanks again Blue Bowtie!

Ok,

I have used steel wire brush to clean the body from bigger amount of old foam layer and after that I used the number 80 sand paper to get rid most of the remaining glue residue. Seems quite good... Maybe this is enough before to start to glue the new fabric?

Some minor cracks should be fixed in the hanger hook area, Which material, cartoon or which?

By the way, If I leave the hanger hooks from installing, which is the good material to fill the body "cups" before installing the new fabric?

If this is the bad idea to leave the hooks off, please tell.

Re: Headliner

An other issue,

there is some sound proofing plates installed on to roof, with some self adhesive material. I want to renew that partly hanging plates but how to remove the old glue stuff from the roof? Seems to be tricky stuff...

Thanks in forward!

Re: Headliner

If you are asking about the sound deadener material glued to the panels, I have no idea what adhesive they might have used. I do know that contact adhesive might hold it, but everything needs to be really clean and dry before using that.

Re: Headliner

I meant the sound deadening plates glued or something on to the roof sheet( size is about 20 inches) "under" the headliner But this issue is cleared now. Take the pads off and clean the old glue from the roof with some solvent and rag. Thanks!

But, what is the meaning regarding the very thin plastic foam layer on the back side of the headliner? Was easy to remove that partly bad stuff massaging it off with with the gloves. Is it important to renew it with new one?

Re: Headliner

Hi,

I renew the sound deadener plates on to GN roof. Could I use the material with 6 mm thickness, the original is 2 mm? How is the tolerances between the head liner and roof.....
