Question 1986 olds 98 regency fuel pump whines in idle??

1986 olds 98 regency brougham elite

loud whine from gas tank / FP area when car is idling, put when you accelerate the whine completely disappears until you take your foot off the pedal. Have read that it could be because a of cheap fuel pump (recently replaced - didn't spend more than $150 for the assembly (FP/Tank)). I replaced the fuel filter.

Also heard it could be a clogged CAT but the exhaust breaths great, miles are 48K (though it is the original 86 CAT installed). But really the sound is almost certainly coming from inside the tank. loudest is near filler neck.

Any ideas greatly appreciated???

Cheap fuel pump usually, but how about the chassis filter and/or tank strainer, were they both replaced?

That's a good question. That is the one job I didn't do myself, and the first I had done. I have wondered about the Fuel Pump Strainer myself...reason being because I found both the old AND an new one in the trunk several weeks later! That could mean they forgot to put it on, or they had 2 new ones.?. (Of course they say they put a new one on). Anyway, first I am hearing about a chasis filter, and not sure about the state of the strainer.

If the regular filter in line in the front of the tank is resrticted it will cause the pump to be noisey, that is replaced on a 30k interval as it is.

I will definitely look into that and change it. Thanks very much for your advice!
