Legend has it that a decent squirt of WD40 to the gearbox mechanics that could be seen through the rear bodywork was needed per pitstop near the end of the race to 'free up' the mechanism and clean it of race grime, ensuring a smoother running gearbox

Re: The Official: "There's no such thing as a dumb question about the McLaren F1" thread

what issue was that?

Heard the gearbox WD40 story before as well, although not direct from Paul. IIRC the gearbox was improved for 96...although DPR were doing their own development at that point.

TBH (and just my opinion)the wet weather in the night helped more than the WD40 with the Lanzante entry as they were pacing themselves a bit at the start where as DPR and GTC were pushing. Wet weather and a good driver like Lehto puts less load on the gearbox.

Anyone know the wins to races percentage the GTR had during it's lifetime?

I believe it was more to keep the change linkage free of grit and debris rather than the actual box it's self.

That's how I understood it too. I thought there was some grease that lubricated the linkage as it passed into the gearbox casing. The spray from the wet race then washed away the grease and the linkage was in danger of seizing. I believe something similar happened to phlegmke. He drove through a deep puddle that flooded a road. It was deep enough to get the carpets wet in the car, and at the same time deep enough to wash away the grease from the linkage. The linkage seized and the car was stuck in third gear. IIRC, he drove it home that way, no problem.

How many wheels does a McLaren have? In all the pictures I see, there is only 3. Please dont blow me off as an idiot, but there is only 3 seats, so I am not sure about the number of wheels.

Re: The Official: "There's no such thing as a dumb question about the McLaren F1" thread

The videoclips thread has been couple of posts about F1's brake noise. That very clearly heard whistling.

Does anyone know why the noise is there?
What it makes up?
The an orginal brakes are Brembos, so they shouldn't never be any bad brakes.
Does the noise couse by the desing of the suspension/chassis? Or brake disc?

And second; the DA book explainded they didn't get the carbon brakes work so they had to sedlle of down steel discs.
Today; many sports cars has carbon-ceramic brakes, is it how much different case than what McLaren tryed get work back 20 years ago?

And third; has anyone uptaded his F1 with carbon-ceramic brakes, changed the steel discs to the carbon discs?
No I don't mean GTR's, the F1 roadcars.

Thanks for the answers!
