Alclad II vs. Kosutte Gin San...bye, bye Alclad!

Guys, I agree.... GinSan is too dark when applied over a black base... my McLaren posted above has a Tamiya TS Mica silver base and I think it gives a more realistic Chrome finish.

Also, regarding Alclad, I have heard a lot of people comment that it is very fragile and rubs off when handled. I wonder if this is because it isn't adhering to the basecoat properly because something other than Alclads own Enamel has not been used ?.
I have only ever used The alclad brand black enamel and have found my Alclad chrome to be extremely durable and wont rub off even the slightest amount when done this way..... I prefer it over GinSan.

Thoughts?

Did you used the mica silver a base instead of the gloss black base in the McLaren? you used the KGS on it,right?

i agree KGS appear darker than alclad, but it had superb reflection compare to alclad

here is mr color steel as base (clearcoat above the line, bottom is just mr color steel)


then rub the KGS on

Yes, Mica silver topped with TS13 clear, then some GINSAN rubbed on.

OK Dan, thanks a lot. What I'm still not understand is that after you got this incredible result, better that anyone around, why you still say that its better the Alclad that, like this modeler said before, has no better reflection than KGS and its not as durable?

I am one of those people. Whenever i use aclad chrome, and handle the parts after i find my fingers with rubbed off aclad. Not much but enough to tell. Thats why i always wanted a solution of clearing it. And i use the aclad gloss black that is recommended.

On another note, i got some of this KGS and have to say i love it. But i was wondering if it is possible to clear it? Can it be done, or will it dull up the chrome?

I have read that it's not recommended to clear it with anything.

I've had to clear over it (a "do over") and the effect was ruined. Don't clear it.

My order from Japan should be here any day now. I've got a couple of convertible windows that need chrome frames, so that will be my first KSG attempt.

In the meanwhile, I've got some dumb questions.

How do you put the stuff on? With a brush? Do you need to mask off areas where you don't want it? Does it get all over everything? Do you need to clear the area before opening the jar?

I've got a large supply of Alclad black, so that would be the obvious choice for an undercoat. But I don't want a dark look, so I'm tempted to try a silver base.

Viperofoz, was there a particular reason for clearing the TS Mica base, or do you think it would work just as well uncleared? Did you sand and polish out any orange peel before putting on the KSG?

I've got some AS-12 Bare Metal Silver and some TS-17 Gloss Aluminum on hand - any reason why one of those wouldn't work as well as the Mica?

It has seemed to me that Alclad sticks better to the Alclad undercoat than it does to polished TS-13. Is there any problem with KSG rubbing off a polished clearcoat? What about wet-sanding the undercoat with 2000 grit? (That would definitely ruin the sparkle of Alclad, but would the KSG still be smooth and sparkly?)

You will apply it with a cotton swap. For tiny parts I recommend the tiny ones from Gunze Sangyo or Tamiya. Then, you will rub it with the cotton flannel that comes with the set.
