Re: WIP: McLaren M23 - 1976 - Hunt (Tamiya 1:20)
Gorgeous looking build so far. A true classic car. Look forward to seeing what you do to the engine/gearbox now...

Re: WIP: McLaren M23 - 1976 - Hunt (Tamiya 1:20)
In the meantime I made some progress.
I weathered, drybrushed en detailled the engine a little. I scratchbuilt the taillight that the kit didn't have. ![]() ![]() I also promised to show you the endresult of the injection pump. I attached the 8 fuel lines and painted them with clear yellow, and I also attached the 8 spark plug hoses. ![]() I also prepared some oil hoses and brake lines. They are made from Modeler's 0.9mm mesh hose and Sakatsu bolts. ![]() I thinned the rear wing supports for about 50% and added a few hoses. ![]() The rear brakes and the cooling devices are already sprayed in color but still need weathering. ![]() A few small engine parts have been extra detailled and painted, as the lower suspension arms, the radiators and the drive shafts. All these parts still need weathering. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

I’d love to have this model in my collection. Hope Tamiya edits it again.
Nice work so far Guy. |

Re: WIP: McLaren M23 - 1976 - Hunt (Tamiya 1:20)
After some weathering and drybrushing I fixed a few engine parts to the engine block; so I'll start this post with 5 general overview pics.

Re: WIP: McLaren M23 - 1976 - Hunt (Tamiya 1:20)
I drilled a hole out of a piece of leftover photoetch and I fixed it to the supports top and bottom. Next I spun thin metal wire around a metal rod to form a spring, that I bended at the ends so the hook up in the drilled holes.

Re: WIP: McLaren M23 - 1976 - Hunt (Tamiya 1:20)
Guy,
the weathering on the motor looks perfect, not to heavy but enough to make the thing look 'used', it is exactly how I like to try and make my engines look - except you seem to pull it off and mine look as though they have had an oil leek at 12,000 rpm! Absolutely brilliant stuff.

Re: WIP: McLaren M23 - 1976 - Hunt (Tamiya 1:20)
I took it one step further in comparison to my prototype. What I did up to this point was merely an enhancement of the existing kitpart, thinking that its shape was the same as the real thing. But it isn't!

Re: WIP: McLaren M23 - 1976 - Hunt (Tamiya 1:20)
Hi Guy,
Great build, and I'm sure most of us would have been happy to leave the shocks as they were, but I have to hand it to you, the Mk.2 version look absolutely spot-on. Keep the updates coming, I built this kit many years ago and I've recently got hold of a white box edition (and I didn't pay too much either) you build is going to provide lots of tips. Happy modelling Ant |
