Re: Steve McQueen's "Le Mans" Porsche 917K

I'm sure all of you have seen Sean's efforts wiring up the HRM Porsche flat twelve engine. Well here is mine pretty much done. Took me all evening to do and at 1 am in the morning I've packed up tools and off to bed well satisfied.

Re: Steve McQueen's "Le Mans" Porsche 917K

HOW, WHAT, WHERE, WHEN....

it has taken me an age to get as far as I have with the motor and you come along Phil with this beauty, beautiful, absolutely beautiful.

Being at the same stage as Phil with the engine I can tell you all how fiddley this is and how time consuming it is to get it neat and right, Phil you have pulled it off a treat... grrr, dont you just a hate a smart a**e!

top job mate

That is a piece of art. Fantastic metallic finishes on the engine. Very realistic.

Awesome job!!
Those reservoirs/tanks, are stunning! Very clean build, excellently done!
My only question arises from the battery cables, aren’t they a little thin? They seem more like ignition wire.
The battery cables are normally 1/0 AWG which, plus insulation result in a 9-13 mm diam cable.

Great job!

I normally use the DM hoses and fittings, what I do to help me a little with the frayed ends and also with bends, is to run a wire into the braided hose, a wire a little smaller in diameter than the hose and as soft as possible, then a very small drop of cyano at the end prevents fraying.

Phil: the wiring and detail on the engine is awesome!!
Excellent! Very crisp and clean!

What did you use for the transparent hose? I have used fishing line (transparent) but I find it a little hard to bend

Congratulations

Re: Steve McQueen's "Le Mans" Porsche 917K

Thanks guys.

I know you are kidding about the self confidence thing Stevensky, you and most others in this thread accomplish things I wouldn't dare try!

Sean, makes a nice change me building something quicker than you. As you can see I've cheated with the injectors so that saved me some time...

Excellent point Ramon, I'm off to scrounge up some thicker wire, thanks for the suggestion.

Re: Steve McQueen's "Le Mans" Porsche 917K

Finished decaling the bodywork, as well as weathered the underside. Dunno if the latter is anything close to accurate but it make it a bit more interesting that stark white.

The Melbourne Model Expo is next weekend, I'd love to have this finished by then. Unfortunately I've caught a bad case of the flu and feel pretty lousy.

Re: Steve McQueen's "Le Mans" Porsche 917K

Wait! Would you say that the rear cowl is fixed, not openable? With these engine details?

The result is superb, the underpanel seem playwood LOL at first look, it seems you messed up a bit near wheel arches and on the front edges: may be a bit of dirty (black-smoke overspray on edges simulating oil and rubber) may rend it more interesting indeed and cover the little fault (if it is). Another contest killer uh?

Re: Steve McQueen's "Le Mans" Porsche 917K

Dunno if you are kidding or not Gio, but yes the rear opens up, everything is just sitting roughly in place for the above shots.

As for the underside - I just masked off the orange, streaked some smoke on the white then rubbed in some orange rust from Tamiya's weathering set. Any blotches and whatnot are purely a bonus. As we figured out in Sean's thread the underside was painted white when the original 25 917 chassis were built and presented for homologation in April 1969 and seemingly never repainted. By the time of the film over a year later it would have been dirty and scratched under there. That is all I’m aiming (or shooting in the dark) at.

Re: Steve McQueen's "Le Mans" Porsche 917K

Very, very nice work! The bodywork looks fantastic with the decals applied.I really like the weathered effect you have achieved on the underside,it looks very subtle, but highly convincing. The engine wiring looks superb as well.Top job all round Phil.
