Re: ULTIMATE SCRATCHBUILD: 1/6 Hot Rod (Progress)

Nice work, Mike!

Looking at the rim, wouldn't it be easier to build up the tunerish 5 spoke into the Crager (or whatever) 5 spoke style rather than remove all that material only to add it again? I know you want deep dish, but wouldn't it be easier to add a deep dish using one of the 2 methods in the how to depository than to remake all that material?

Good luck with it, either way!

Been following this thread since the beginning, and I must say that your project is surpassing every one of my expectations. When you said scratchbuild, you really meant it. Pieces of raw steel coming together under the torch to become an automobile. The metalworker can do this, but it takes an artist to do it and make it look good.

Mike, it's lookin' good.

Heres a quick little "update". Its just a rough sketch of a tap to be tapped into the frame rails for the body to bolt to. it is an extremely tiny part. Soon I will draw it in CAD for a much clearer and accurate view. The drawing was drawn at 50:1 scale, dimensions are the size the piece will be. The hole will be a M1.2 threaded hole. I will drill 1.5mm holes into the frame rails to insert these extremely tiny pieces.

My plan is to use the spokes I have taken out. I will putty them up and shape them into the desired look. Then I will insert them back into the rim. However, if I can get the CNC mill at school working again I will machine the centers out of styrene or 6060 aluminum.

One of the best posts I have seen in this thread. Thank a lot, real deep, and deeply appreciated!

To everyone else, I really appreciate the replies, they keep me up when I am down.

Updates:

UPDATES:

I spent a good part of the day working on the rim to be cast. Damn thats a lot of work. It doesnt look like much. There are a couple layers of styrene to get it almost flush with the lip of the rim. Then I puttied it up to get a nice flush finish...but still isnt smooth, just look at all the divets.

The spokes that are in the rim are just to give you an idea on my plan. My plan in which I will use the spokes, then modify them, and then set them back in the rim. Believe me, I love the way they look now...but its not going to stay .

Tomorrow I might reweld the frame and work on the wheels. Tuesday/Wednesday I will refill the tank, and weld/cut the front cross member. That is the planned agenda.

Enjoy!

This is a very cool project mike. Good luck with finishing it. IT looks very good for a scratchbuilt model. Have fun.

Hey Mike, thought you might enjoy this link. Project 33 It might give you some motivation and ideas. I've been frequenting that build for a couple years, and have enjoyed it. It may not have the big names like Boyd and Foose or whoever you like so much, but it's a good build nonetheless.

Thanks Will! Great site.

Welp, not much of the frame will change today and tomorrow. Tomorrow is my Uncles B-Day, so time to celebrate. Also not to mention I UV burned my forehead welding aluminium. That hurts...

I will try to get some work on the rims done hopefully.

EDIT: I took a crappy cam with me when I went to weld the other day.
