Re: WIP: Tamiya 1/20th Ferrari F189 (Early)

Once again, thanks for all the help guys with the front brake duct references and advice.

I have deleted the large brake duct from the single piece that Tamiya provides with the front suspension mount (for want of a better word).

You can see on the 2nd image a knife-cut R so that I know which side is which and which way around these fit (it would be painful to fit the induction scoops fitting the wrong way).

I tried to scratch the replacement induction ducts myself but after 3 attempts I gave up. I then had a brain-wave and decided to use the very similar ducts on the 1/20th Fujimi Ferrari 126 C2. I will not be needing these for that build as I have the "Grade-Up" kit and that features clear ducts. The only task was to shorten the parts and drill and cut out a aperture.

I am going to leave the pieces separate for the time being as the ducts are going to be CFed but the strut/mount will be metal.

Still plenty of work to be done on these parts to get them looking right. Hopefully this will give you guys an idea of where I am going with the front ducting.

Also, as a bonus update, I have now completed the CF job on the front and rear wings. SMS Hi-Def and Kevlar in 1/20th used throughout. No clear yet on these items. I have drilled holes out which will have hardware inserted once complete (front and rear wing end plates and the gurney flap on the rear top element). You will also notice that I have added the front wing gurney flaps too, which are on the box artwork but not in the kit. These come from the Studio 27 PE set for the Williams FW24 (which I had left over).

Still some MicroSolling to be done on the CF and decalled parts to get everything flat but it is almost there. Still got the under-tray to start CFing though which is one of those tedious tasks I like to leave until last!

Regards,
Bill

Re: WIP: Tamiya 1/20th Ferrari F189 (Early)

Quick update:

I have shortened and drilled out the entire aperture of the Ferrari 126 C2 ducts using a pin vise, a sharp knife, and plenty of patience. I covered the ducts with Studio 27 carbon fibre decal as it seemed to match the references well (but on reflection, now I see them on these photographs, the CF pattern is WAY too big)... although, I will no doubt live with it. There is still some MicroSoling required to finish these parts off but it will give you guys an idea of where I am heading. I am really happy that I made the effort on these items as they will definitely add to the realism.

The uprights have been tidied up and given a fresh coat of Semi-gloss black (X-18). I will add some weathering to these items in the near future.

Thanks,
Bill

Re: WIP: Tamiya 1/20th Ferrari F189 (Early)

It's been a while but I've managed to get some modelling done over the Christmas break.

As usual, Tamiya moulded the seatbelt to the seat on the F189. This makes painting the seat/seatbelt difficult, and limits the application of texture to the seat. On the Jordan 191 and Ferrari 312T3, I used sticky-backed felt for the seat and, although this worked okay, the felt was quite thick and looked out of scale. For this build, I wanted to try something different.

The seatbelt was deleted using a mini-rotary drill. The seat was then sanded smooth and Milliput was used to get a smooth surface. Then, using a Pin Vise, I added four holes to the seat where the seatbelt would eventually be fed through.

The seat was then primed with Halfords Grey Primer before Micro Balloons were applied to create the textured surface. Once dried, I applied Tamiya XF-52 (Flat Earth) followed by a wash of Citadel Minatures Brown Ink.

The texture and color on the seat look first class

Is it just me or are the links to the other photos in your WIP dead?

Nope, it isn't just you; they were dead links after I moved my site. All corrected now though... thanks for the heads up.

Re: WIP: Tamiya 1/20th Ferrari F189 (Early)

The Scale Motorsport (SMS) seatbelt is now completed and installed.

I used the SMS 1/20 scale Racing Harness Photoetch Set. The fabric was coloured with an Edding 4600 T-Shirt pen which I got from HobbyCraft. The blue backing on the PE was cleaned up by soaking in vinegar and was then rubbed/scraped off (the vinegar wasn't strong enough on its own, so will try another technique next time). Rather than painting (which I confess to having difficulty doing with very small PE parts) I coloured the PE black using a Stabilo Write-4-all permanent marker pen.

The steering wheel had Micro Balloons applied to create the textured surface. Once dried, I applied Citadel Miniatures Black Ink. Figure 2 shows the finished result. The dashboard itself features hand-painted buttons.

P.S. The macro shots really do accentuate the fluff and mistakes and you can see where I did a rushed job of cloning the fluff out in Lightroom.
