Re: Steve McQueen's "Le Mans" Porsche 917K

I really wasn't happy with the Finisher's Gulf Blue so I lightened it with a heap of white and repainted the car. Only I'm still not happy! The hue is better now but still too blue and not gray enough. Oh well, I'm finished mucking about with it now, any more coats of paint and fitment will start being an issue. Anybody thinking of spending money on Finisher's Gulf Blue don't bother, you'd do better mixing something up yourself. To top it off I'm not happy with the orange either. :sigh:

Here is what the bodywork looks like now. First up in daylight, then fluorescent after clear coating.

Hey, that blue looks like a contender for my M1 dilemma

Striking contrast between the blue and the orange stripe!

Re: Steve McQueen's "Le Mans" Porsche 917K

You might want to check your level of perfection! I would be sooo happy with such a great result on a paint job and as I´m always too scread to do things all over again, I would have been stuck with the first paint job anyways... As color is always a question of perspective and light, I wouldn´t be too harsh on myself, anyways.

I´m sure this would look just gulfish-blueish-right on my shelf over here in Germany. The light is sure different over here

Re: Steve McQueen's "Le Mans" Porsche 917K

Phil,

Im sure sure the colours would right here in the UK too!!! :-)

the bodywork looks beautiful and the colours look spot on, it looks like we have both gone for the same idea for the hinge for the rear hood however how do you plan hinging the door?

Your prep work has been top notch matey and it is showing in the finish you have now, brilliant stuff!

Re: Steve McQueen's "Le Mans" Porsche 917K

Thanks guys, I'm learning to live with the colours now.

Sean, the door isn't hinged as such just able (in theory) to be positioned open or closed. Here is a blown up pic of the door, basically the top fixture is a piece of styrene card with a rod through it so it sits open at the proper angel. Similar deal at the bottom, it fits into a notch in the door frame. I had a go at a brass hinge but the angles were too tricky so I went this way.

Nice result with the paintwork Phil.Personally I think the colours look spot on.Maybe the blue looks a little too 'blue' in the daylight shot but not much.In the fluorescent picture the colours look perfect.

Great paint job, and nice idea with the hinges.

Re: Steve McQueen's "Le Mans" Porsche 917K

Got quite a lot done over the weekend, working on the fiddily odds and sods. Here's a crappy pic of some of the more interesting bits.

Lots of work in those fiddly little bits.
I wish I had some motivation to complete some at the moment!

The fire extinguisher looks good with the hoses and fittings etc.

Re: Steve McQueen's "Le Mans" Porsche 917K

Little works of art in their own right

Phil, what brand of mesh hose and fittings are you using?

I tried working with some Detail Master hose and fittings this morning and it drove me nuts! The hose didn't fit into fittings, it frayed all over the place and when I tried to put a drop of CA on the end, it "wicked" itself half way up along the whole hose

Re: Steve McQueen's "Le Mans" Porsche 917K

Stevenski: I'm using Sakatsu compression fittings, Modeler's and Model Master mesh hoses. Yes they can be a trial to assemble. Sometimes if the ends are difficult going into the fittings I use superglue wicked in to hold the frayed ends together.

Main problem is I'm running out of the Sakatsu bits at a rapid rate and they are not that easy to find.
