Re: "W.I.P" Tamiya Benetton B192 1/20th

A bit off topic...

Is there a big difference in overall bodyshape between the B192 and the B194? In other words, would this kit be a good starting point for a B194?

Love the paintjob by the way!

They look similar but I don't think it would be easy to convert the Tamiya kit into the B194.You may be better to get one of the resin B194's from Studio 27.I think it would be a lot easier than trying to convert the Tamiya kit into one.Although I'm no expert on Benettons.I'm sure there's someone on here that can give you an expert opinion.

Re: "W.I.P" Tamiya Benetton B192 1/20th

Small update.I've completed the brakes (simple affair 2 colours)

I am well on the way with the nose section.Polished up and the majority of decals applied although still some more to go on and the wing end plates still to fit.The blue decal which I was dreading applying in case it wrinkled went on perfectly.A lot to be said for the quality of Studio 27 decals.

This is the left side almost finished.I thought initially that the front wing supports appeared to be too long but when the blue 'L P I' transfer, the 2 dots and the white stripe are applied it makes it appear shorter.Compare it to the other side and you'll see what I mean.

All the yellow parts are now painted and drying before the green is applied.Until the next update.

Nice update. The nose and front wings look superb especially now they are decalled up.

Just checked the Formula Perfect manual but it only goes up to the B193B. From the images I have seen on www.f1-facts.com, the B194 is much more similar to the B195 which Schuey won the championship with in 1995. I have the 1/20 Academy B195 and would recommend using that as a starting point as they are very similar and the kit is much cheaper than S27. Also, it is plastic not resin. They pop-up on eBay every now and then; I paid less than 12.50GBP (inc P&P) for mine about 6 months ago.

Hi Bill,

What's the quality like on the Academy kit? Been looking at maybe trying to get one myself but I've never seen one built up.

I've only looked inside the box and not opened the polythene bags. Consequently, I can't really comment on fitment other than to say that the injection moulding looks like Tamiya's (in terms of detail and complexity), the tyres look like a little Revell-ish (i.e. a bit square and firm) but are much softer like Tamiya's, and the decals look like Cartograph.

So in conclusion, I'd just consider it another 1/20th scale Tamiya F1 Kit that already has usable decals Put it this way, if they replaced the artwork and instructions I don't think I could distinguish it from a Tamiya model... and that is high praise indeed.

Bill

There is one major problem with the Academy kit and that is the fact that there is no back to the monocoque, so you're left with a hollow space where the fuel cell should be just in front of the engine.

Of course if you not removing the bodywork its not a problem but why go to the trouble of moulding the detail on the engine if you can't display it

Its quite easily resolved with a bit of plasticard and Eric Evain's helpful little drawing http://perso.orange.fr/eric.evain/im...5/planb195.gif
but its one of the reasons Academy haven't hit the mark as well as Tamiya, nice try but no cigar

BTW nice build so far Steve, love the reflection of the wing in the nosecone, real nice paintjob

I hadn't noticed that. Thanks for the heads up and the pointer to a fix for the problem.

There is another advantage to this kit that I have just thought of... you could always make it up to be the Ligier JS41

Cheers,
Bill

Re: "W.I.P" Tamiya Benetton B192 1/20th

Small update on the model. The nose and wing is now finished. The only thing I may add are some photoetch rivet head details on the side plates to cover the Tamiya location holes for the end plates as thay look a little unsightly.Other than that I am very happy with the way it turned out.Making a good job of the filling and sanding certainly paid dividends and I feel the whole assembly looks a lot better for it.

Overall front view

Side view showing the location holes next to the 'Camel' Logos

The centre section where I cut and filled the area around the wing supports ended up looking a lot better with no join lines

Still letting the yellow have a good dry.So I may complete the rear wheels next as the fronts are finished already.Until the next update..........

Great looking front wing. The location holes in the side fences would look better covered. The SMS PE set has some that are the perfect size... I know because I have used them on the Tyrrell for the exact same reason

Cheers,
Billy P

Which SMS set do you refer to Bill? Is it the general one that has a variety of fittings and fasteners etc?

Hi Steve,

Sorry, I should have been more specific... yes, that is the one I meant. It is code 8117 on the SMS website:

Although... having said that, I had a look at the reference pictures in the FP manual and now I am not so sure... the SMS pieces look too big. For the Tyrrell the nuts are spot on for size... the B192 appears to have smaller heads with a phillips fitment? However, saying that, the SMS PE items are the perfect size for covering the holes that you have? Decisions, decisions...

Kind regards,
Bill
