I don't mean to be a dick, but it sounds like none of you guys have actually driven a CL-S with a 6-speed. I was considering one before I got my Maxima, and I have to admit that it is just about as fast as my 3.5, and the tranny is a whole lot better. It doesn't pull quite as hard, but damn close, and it definitely pulls harder than any pre 2k2 Maxima.

This is the fact; cars are WAY FASTER than 20 years ago, or even 10. Hell, that Ion Redline would piss on any Mustang GT before the 1999 model year. Now that is some crazy shit.
I don't disagree with you in the slightest. I was simply trying to put a little counter balance on these intelligent statements:

but the fact is the Accord is faster than the Max in every way (as it should be since it is newer etc)

If I had a choice, I would drive a 99 anything over a 96, it is newer.
How well built and engine is, the technology that it offers, and it's final output essentially a matter of marketing, not necessarily a matter of Company X being better than Company Y.

The VQ was designed to be a race engine for a new race circuit that was canceled before it started. When the circuit failed to be, Nissan made the decision to put it in their company flagship; the Maxima. It is probably the best N/A V6 engine they have ever designed.

Honday really took off at a time in this country when running a fuel efficient car was a better alternative to the big gas chuggers, and their engine design seems to parralel that maketing. Honda was the first company that I know of to offer completely different cams for better breathing in the higher RPMs for average consumer market (although fararri had done something similar with a more advanced cam design years before, it's about how you are marketing the car). Not only does it give the egine considerably more power up top, but it also maintains a very fuel efficient profile. That too is a great engineering accomplishment.

The Hemi, one of the most sought after V8 engines in the world, is making it's return (in head design only) for the new Dodge models. Although it is a smaller version of the original, displacement was not the reason for this engine's design success. Why is it coming back? Because the overal design was so well engineered that it still proves to make great power.

3 differnt engine types, designed at 3 different time intervals, all great designs.

Acura did have a serious problem with the 5spd auto tranny that they put in the 2K CL/TL's. I think there was metal piece inside the tranny that was breaking down too easily, creating metal shavings, and binding the entire tranny. The details of my recollection may be off, but the basic problems is the same. They caught it and fixed the design problem, but it wasn't very good when the 2k designs were pushed out of the factory.

Fortunately, my wife's 2k CL has not had a problem with that yet. :knock on wood:

yeah but at least acura as a company is good enough to rectify the problem. my friend with the 2k1 cl got a 30,000 mile extension(to 100K) on his tranny warranty cuz of the trouble they've been having.

Yes, it is a sweet thing they did, but... They will only rectify the problem if you have it. So, my tranny has to fail before they will replace it.

Nissan did something similar with the R50 pathfinder with the VG33E for the exhaust manifold. Evidentally, poor design/materials allowed the exhaust manifold studs to break, causing an exhaust leak. They extended my warrenty to 100k miles also.

The big difference is that I can drive with a cracked exhaust manifold stud, but when the cl tranny goes, it's not only undrivable, it's also dangerous.
