hahahahah nawww... the G86 is in my Tohoe... the G80 is in my S10, i was asing about the G80 because the one in my tohoe slips alot and when i go in a turn with the tohoe and floor it the tire with the less weight churps, but i was saying that the G80 in my s10 is acting like the limited but a whole lot stronger like when it locks and i go in a turn the tire starts squilling or when im on dirt the tire hops in a turn but when i go up hill it spins then locks and it starts moving forward but the tire off the ground spin a shit load but slow kinda.... i did it with the toheo and it woulding even make it up the hill in 2 wheel so i asumed that there were two types of G80s one with a locking pos traction and the the 2nd with a locking limited slip but has springs in it for up to 800lb or somthing idk but the rear end is freaking me out.. i was asking this whole time if i might have somthing twisted in the rear making it seem like limited stip and when i got in the gas on the hill it finished it off or if i had a locking limited slip.. i just need to know so i dont buy the wrong part... i but it on the wrack at the house and spun my back tire by hand and it spins freely then it grabs then i put more force into it and it goes a little more and starts getting harder to spin..

i know that lol the G86 is in my tohoe and the G80 is in my s10..i tested the G86 and it couldnt make it up the hill at all...i know how to test limited slip. when u go into a turn and u floor the truck or car or suv the tire with the less wieght on it starts to churp...but anyway when i tested the G80 on the same hill as the tohoe it spun then locked but the one that was off the ground continued to spin but yet i was moving forward...all im asking is did they make two types of G80s?? one that had a locking posi traction and one with locking limited slip?? when im on assfault with the s10 and if the diff is locked it will squill in a turn but when i get on a hill and it has alot of weight on one tire the one with the less will spin more than the one with weight but when i mean the tire had less weight i mean u have to put atleast half the body weight on one tire to make it slip alot.. i just need to know what part i need to buy to maked it lock again.. i put the truck on the rack after i was on the hill and heard a zing sound from getting in the gas alot and the tire will rotate but then grap then rotat then grab again it

buy some 75-90wt synthetic gear lube . open the G80 diff cover and see what parts fall out. using a cloth with mineral spirits wipe down the diff housing and cover to remove all the metal debris black goop.. make sure the magnet is clean on the cover ..inspect the gear teeth for cracks damage etc.. if it looks good put cover on and fill to 1/2inch below fill hole and go for a test ride after driving a few miles. if you keep flooring it going up hills the diff is going to fail. not made to slam in and out of locked position ..easy on this operation .. |

My 2008 Silverado reg cab 2wd shows GT4 in the glove box. I still have the original window sticker and it shows 3.73 rearend upgrade. I do not have the G80 code, but when I'm on gravel and hit the gas both rear tires spin. any thoughts???

There are three types of rear ends (that I know of)...
The single track or open end - where one wheel and one wheel only, turns. How lame is that. The common slip or limited slip style diff that puts power to both wheels, but allows for that power to vary from side to side most commonly used in turning. It eliminates one of the tires from chirping or hopping in a turn. Then there is what I call the True Positive Traction Diff. Not to be confused with the "posi-track" used by (GM) or "trac-lok” use by (Ford). This diff does not belong on the street. It is for race cars . It has no side to side slip. The gears are set, no clutches. And if the input turns "x" times both wheels turn "y" times. |

Here’s the difference, correct me if I’m wrong.
Posi- positive locking differential. Like (lock right). Actual physical meshing of metal pieces, using spider gears that are spring loaded. Which will override in turns and click to allow wheel speed difference, and fully lock and mesh on straight aways allowing full power to both wheels. Lsd- limited slip differential. uses clutches and medal plates with springs, when wheel speed differs, spider gears will override and springs will expand allowing clutches to not rub on one another to smoothen out the power from one wheel to the other. When on straight away, springs will shut, and clutches lock with metal plates allowing power to both wheels. kinda like the clutch and pressure plate in a trani. that’s what 8.8 traction locks are. there’s also worm gear set ups like the true trac, and wave trac. which are like Lsd, but uses worm gears to do the same thing. |

not to confuse some with this rear diff on silverado trucks ..
The G80 is the eaton locker rear diff used on silverado trucks... The G86 is the limited slip diff used on cars and small car trucks like the S10 / blazer, or the caprice/impala ss full sized sedans pre 2000....... The GT4 is the open diff ONE wheel drive..this will be on silverados with no 4WD ... the eaton locker is mechanically activated..one rear wheel moves too much more than the other this locks the rear axle together as one..works great in snow or mud...go to the eaton web site as this will give great detailed info on operation ..many complain of this locker banging into the locked position ..this is because they used the wrong lube or the lube was not replaced at the proper interval repalcing the diff oil at the first 2,ooo miles is required..then every 30-40,ooomi..more if towing hauling heavy loads.. very important never change the fluid with out removal of the cover to clean out the diff box/gears... the G86 limited slip is just that ..it is always working in this limited mode. only offers a limited amount of traction to both wheels ..not good in snow or mud ..too limited slips too much.. Gt4 is not good with truck use. It is offered and I guess if you live in a warm area of no snow this is possible to be workable.. |
