Quick question: When I've told others that I use synthetic only, many have asked if I have had leaking problems with it. Is there some kinda myth about synthetics being leaky?

Yes, the biggest myth about synthetics is that is causes leaks which is not true at all.

Synthetics run so clean, they can clean out the crud that is plugging a leak and when the leak starts, the people think the synthetic did it when actually, it was there before.

I switched to synthetic when my engine had 125,000 miles on it and I haven't seen a drop yet.

My truck leaked about half a quart the first time I used synthetic because it cleaned some crud that must have plugged a small imperfection somewhere so the conventional oil wouldn't leak. Once the seals were all clean they must have reswelled cause synthetic oil is known to reswell seals much better. So I will never switch back nor was I worried when it slowly leaked about half a quart. Happy trucking! Go with MOBIL1!!!!!! I love it

For sure, Mobil 1 is great for mileage too.

Also everyone, NOT ALL SYNTHETICS ARE ACTUAL 100% SYNTHETIC.

Some are hydrocranked conventional oils and not true PAO based 100% pure true synthetic.

The only true synthetics are:

Mobil 1
Amsoil
Esso XD-3 Synthetic 0w30 (Canada only: Best oil in the world)
Redline
Castrol Syntec 0w30 (Has to have "Made in Germany" on the back of the bottle)

I thought Castrol was asia-made? Guess I was mis-led by the Castrol Car on Gran Turismo. What about that Royal Purple Ribbon Gold stuff. Is that what it's called? Isn't that a full synthetic? There was something wrong with it. I'm not remembering right now. I'm tired. Time for bed. .......

Castrol Syntec 0w30 is made in the US and in Germany, you want the one from Germany.

Royal purple is not 100% synthetic, but a mix of the two.

Re: $10 Oil Filter

So what type of oil and filters are you guys using. Just Mobil1. This is a synthetic right? Ive just been using conventional oil but It seems like there is some advantages to synthetic. So I guess I will be changing. Is there anything else you need to do to use synthetic? Can I stick with 5w-30 or do you need to go thicker? Thanks for any input

Stick with the same oil weight. For a filter I use Wix or Napa or the Fram X2. AC Delco is fine also. Stay away from any Fram filter that is not the X2. Make sure you either use MOBIL1 or MOBIL1 Extended oil change interval oil. The mobil clean 5000 and 7500 are not syntetics. I don't believe the Mobil 1 filter is worth the money, nor the K & N. Just stay away from fram except the X2. You can buy Mobil 1 5W-30 in a 5 quart jug at wal-mart for under $20. Good luck

Yeah, BlazerBoyLT98 is pretty much right on. I use Mobil1 with a NAPA Gold filter. (they are made by WIX, if the filter carrying the WIX name were available in my area I would buy them instead.) The Napa Gold And WIX filters are great, they have great flow and filtering capabilities, plus they have an awesome anti-drainback valve that gives you nice, quiet startups.

Re: $10 Oil Filter

I can't see spending $10 on one filter. I use 2 AC filters over the course on an oil interval. I change it out at the 6-7K marker and top off with fresh. This way I know I'm geting really good filtration. Of course since I put 30K+ a year on the truck the oil isn't in for too long anyway.

For those who can't or won't believe going longer than 3k is healthy - check your owners manual. For the "normal" driving schedule most companies recommend 6-7500k between oil changes.
Very true. I now use Mobil 1 extended oil change interval and I change it when I notice the pressue is way up. usually about 9-12k in to the change

Re: $10 Oil Filter

I think Bosch gets the bulk of their filters made by ....*drummroll* - Champion Labs. Champ makes ye olde AC/Delco PF series filters that go so well in our trucks. Correct me if I am wrong, but - again, food for thought. Blow $10 for the Bosch name in a slick, black can, or spend $3 for the same thing inside the can in AC/Delco blue? Decisions, decisions.....

Just a quick question for you guys. I don't have a Blazer but I figured this would be the best place to ask this. I have a '96 Civic, and I change the oil about every 3k miles, and it comes out totally black. I use Mobil 1 Extended and a Mobil 1 filter. Could the engine really be that dirty? I guess the person that owned it before me didnt really take car of it.
