Re: GTR 21R to be auctioned by Gooding in Scottsdale - Jan 2014

Meant to tell you elsewhere that there is evidence of a similar modification made to these cars at the Sebring and Laguna Seca FIA GT events in 1997. Here is a shot of 21R at that final race so you can see this - shared by mendaman on Flickr.

<-- Click for the album

Clearly there is an update now beyond what you see there that is likely more effective. I don't know the specific date it was done, but safe to assume that any major changes like that would have probably occurred during the 2002 rebuild described in the auction catalog. Perhaps, irrelevant to history, McLaren offered up the latest updates developed for the longtail and the owner chose to incorporate them.

The 'museum' photos you refer to were taken in the USA at Highcroft Racing's facility and date to mid-2006. The former owner prior to then was at the time involved in a legal matter that ended up costing him his collection of cars (many of the ones in those photos) and ultimately his freedom. In December 2006, as the catalog notes, the car wound up in the hands of Christian Gläsel of Germany. It's first public spotting occurred during the photoshoot for Octane Magazine with images dated the 5th of July, 2007. CG was the owner until selling to whomever consigned the car to the auction - that date they did not mention.

Those are great! Josh said the car overall was immaculate - he could find no faults. Whether or not someone got a good deal or whatever, it sounds like they got an exemplary example of the F1 GTR.

Re: GTR 21R to be auctioned by Gooding in Scottsdale - Jan 2014

A gallery of photos from my friend Drew Phillips at Autoblog:

http://www.autoblog.com/photos/1997-...-gtr-longtail/

Shame he didn't find it outside in the light - he also does really nice work when he has more control over the situation.

Their brief article that accompanies by Noah Joseph:

Quote:
Last month we reported on a very rare McLaren being put up for auction under the auspices of Gooding & Company. One of only 106 examples of the McLaren F1 ever made, one of only 28 made in GTR competition spec, and one of just ten longtail versions, chassis number 021R won FIA GT Championship races in Germany and Finland, making it one of the most successful F1 GTRs ever campaigned and earning its place in the pantheon of McLaren lore.

With original livery in immaculate condition, this rare McLaren F1 GTR Longtail sold this weekend in Scottsdale, Arizona, for $5.28 million. Which may seem like a lot of money – and by any account, it surely is – but comes in at the low end of the pre-sale estimates that placed its value at between $5 and $7 million. To put that into proper McLaren perspective, consider that the same amount could buy you a full grid of ten 12C Can-Ams, five examples of the new McLaren P1, or probably get McLaren to build you your own custom creation like the X1. Check out the live images from the scene in the gallery above.

Very nice images indeed. He really knows what to do with camera. I also would have took same quantity of images if possible. Fantastic, thanks for the link.!

Not 100% sure I understand your question, but the numbers 42 and 43 were only used on these cars at Le Mans in 1997.

Racenumber #42 is today in the door of #26R, BMW Museum Munchen is the location. The reason why it wears that, like Erik said; the driver line up.

Re: GTR 21R to be auctioned by Gooding in Scottsdale - Jan 2014

This link has mostly general Scottsdale auction result news, but it does confirm that 21R brought the third highest total price of any car sold on the weekend out of 2,815 total lots on offer.

Re: GTR 21R to be auctioned by Gooding in Scottsdale - Jan 2014

Perhaps the best to ask it here.
IF anyone has images from Helsinki of #21R, where it had that high downforce rear wing setup and high downforce front aerodynamic setup.
There is some images which I have, but too not too many.

Need specialty images of that rear wing and front aerodynamic details and any good image from Helsinki of #21R, specialty with that aerodynamic package seen in the race; is more than welcome!

Thanks for your help!

The circuit looks like Donington Park, 1997 FIA GT 4 hours.
