I'm not the original owner. It has 57,000 miles.

Re: Fuel Sending Unit -- Recall in 6-8wks

You're still covered until 60k if you're the 2nd owner.

Powertrain warranties, as explained to me, basically cover anything lubricated by oil. Where is the documentation that I could use at the dealer to prove the fuel sender is covered before I waste time at the dealership?

And if you the second or higher owner with under 60k miles they'll still pay for it.

Tom, it's kind of a gray area. Isuzu documentation (web site or warranty booklet) states the "fuel pump" is covered by the powertrain warranty. The fuel pump & sender are listed by a single part #, so depending on the dealership, they may or may not cover it for you.

Angry Update: free replacement of sending unit

Heres my experience with the NHTSA and ISUZU dealership and customer relations:

-NHTSA
Others in the thread say the NHTSA have aksed Isuzu to issue a recall. I did not find any proof of that and NHTSA did not have anything but complaints on file.

-Isuzu
Dealership would only replace if formal recall issued unless under warranty. The unit is not and seems will never be covered by a recall. Had a good talk with customer relations, the good news is 2000 and up include sending unit in power train warranty. Bad news is 98-99 do not and nothing will be done about it. The part is about $40 but is involved to replace.

Why do the units go bad?
While talking to customer relations they pulled up some research done by their team. The research finding pointed to a few places around the country that have special fuel additives. Over the counter cleaners may also be similar. I was told the chemical but do not remember off hand. The chemical reacts with the metalic circuitry in the sending unit eating away the sensors. Isuzu worked with many fuel company and state goverments to alert them to the fuel problem. The places I remember were Arizona, Texas and about 6 others. It was corrected they say but the damage was done. They do not feel they need to cover the cost of replacing the units if not already covered by a warranty.

If anyone w/ 98-99 Isuzu has had it replaced without cost please let us know how (email or post). From the people I have talked to I feel these are solid answers.

I just spoke with my local Isuzu Dealership Service manager and there is no notice of recall as of yet (10-5-04).

I am now having this problem too. '99 Rodeo LS V6 4WD. I am the 2nd owner and the Rodeo is at 63k, but I have a used car Powertrain warranty that lasts to 100k (bought in Indiana).......should this be covered under this warranty?

Re: Fuel Sending Unit -- Recall in 6-8wks

I just have our 1999 Honda Passport ABS serviced by Honda Plaza Auto Mall in Brooklyn, NY and the fuel sending unit replaced.

I told them about the ABS recall and the ABS light keeps turning ON even on dry surface. The fuel gauge would drop to 0 from half level. I have them repair both problems last December 2004 and our extended warrany expires February 2005.

Re: Fuel Sending Unit -- Recall in 6-8wks

I edited the title to this post.

There never was a recall and I really doubt there ever will be one.

Re: Fuel Sending Unit -- Recall in 6-8wks

there is not and will not be a recall on the fuel sending unit
yes it is frustrating
the problem is not an isuzu problem it is a fuel additive problem with most likely cause being high sulphur content.
98 model will need to be reprogrammed after replacing the sender
I have had to reprogram some 99 models some never nee it why I do not know its just weird like that
