Re: Re: The F1 Posted a PATHETIC .86 g on skidpad.
are you trying to tell me that McLaren Cars was going to build 300 cars and, as What. said, 100 of those road cars? would the other 200 be F1 GTR or something?

Re: The F1 Posted a PATHETIC .86 g on skidpad.
No, McLaren never intended to build GTRs. The F1 was intended to be a roadcar and they intended to build around 300, IIRC. Gordon Murray explicitly stated that he didn't want anyone to ask him about competing with these cars, as it was being designed for road use only.
As the cars were being made and sold, though, the company found it was losing money on each car, and chances of recovering the losses even after selling 300 of them were slim. I remember reading that the support program for 300 of these cars was going to be very costly, as they had originally planned to provide a lifetime warranty. I also read that orders started to dry up. Not sure if these two rumours are true, but production was stopped after just 100 cars. After some customers took delivery, they put a lot of pressure on the factory to provide support for racing, or create a racing variant. Thus, the GTR program came about (followed by the GT). And we all know how the McLaren F1 did at the races. Last edited by tvrfreak; 12-06-2003 at 08:48 PM. |

Have there been any comments made in retrospect of the events passed? Specifically by GM or other Mclaren staff?
I realyl wish they'd just start production again like in the good old days, but it would take to much away from the car the Mclaren has become today.
