Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought suburus sent power to all wheels if there was slippage (traction control?) otherwise they were 90% FWD and 10% RWD. Os in fact, it wouldn't be the same as a 4WD.

I'm all for the manual by the way.

Re: Manual or Auto?

I believe the proportions for subaru's are something like 60% front wheel drive 40% rear wheel drive... the front gets more power for better control, and because of the weight distribution over the frame. I have 2 subaru's here... (98' legacy wagon, 99 forester (sports package))

Ok why do all the pro race car drivers have stick??? If auto is better?
Not all pro-drivers use stick. Drag racers use auto, the faster shifting of their autos outweighs the benefits of a manual (like they never need to downshift/slow down/take corners). Also, the fact that drag cars have stall converters set very high (how ever you say that) negates the benefit of a clutch.

the shifters they use in wrc are like the tiptronic shifters you can get for the newer bmw's and audi's only they're paddle shifters (like in F1) also, the new ferrari enzo is boasting shift times of .02 seconds with their paddle shifting tranny's... amazing stuff
they are nothing like tiptronic. Tiptronic is a glorified auto. If you want to go first gear going 60 in a paddle shifter, you can. In a tiptronic, you can't. They don't down shift when u want and they lag horribly on shifts.

Re: Manual or Auto?

Oh my god how is this a discussion.

1. Standard models as a general rule have higher top speeds and faster 1/4 mile times than their Automatic counterparts. When performance (not practicality) is concerned, standard is faster, especially in circuit racing.

2. FWD is inferior to RWD applications. When you launch your weight goes to the rear of the car and in a FWD car thats off the drive wheels, reducing traction. And in cornering you understeer while on throttle. The more power a FWD car has the worse its handling characteristics.

FWD Automatics are more economical, and practical for daily driving. But when performance comes to mind... NO!

Re: Manual or Auto?

If I was looking for a street car i would definately pick a manual, but if I was looking to bracket race I am Auto all the way. An auto is much more consistent on launches and doesnt miss a shift ( if it does, its bad ). Plus w/ an auto turbo car you can powerbrake and build boost on the line for better 60' times

Ok let's all be honest manual is the better way to drive. It gives you a higher level of control versus an automatic. Let's be honest I can train a monkey to press the gas pedal down hard when I say go. I don't know about anywhere else but if you see a guy driving a Vette with an automatic everyone sorta laughs at him...manual is it, no doubt about it
