This looks great! I can't wait to see it with the rollcage.

Great progress so far...I'm liking it a whole lot..
Neat work with the front spoiler, it looks like a factory fitted item.

I see too that you have the "Hotwheels" 510 in the background..
I have the same on my shelf....

cheers
Greg

Thanks for the positive comments everyone, hoping to make some more progress soon! The Hotwheels version is actually my daughter's, I sometimes let her play with it too

i pulled out the revell version i started over 5 years ago, good thing you didn't go with it. i like the detail, but the fitting is bad. needs some work. i'll be posting up later.
hows the chassis detail on your kit?
Thanks, the general fit of the Hasegawa kit is very good. The chassis detail is quite simple with moulded in exhaust and engine underside detail. Not ideal, but as I am doing it kerbside I think with some careful detail painting it will look ok.

Re: Datsun 510 - Old School Racer Style

Finally managed to complete the roll cage, suspension modifications in order to fit the wheels and have added the door mirrors.

The photograph below shows the chassis. For the rear suspension I had to cut off the wish bones and drive shafts completely and then re-attach them using wire inserted in holes. This enabled me to bend the wishbones and driveshafts up to suit the lowered suspension. It is a shame you cannot really see the results of the time spent getting it to fit! The front was a bit easier, I simply shortened the springs and added pieces of wire to fit into the original mounting points at the bottom of the strut.

The next photographs show the roll cage. A lot of time was spent getting all the angles and lengths correct to fit into the body. (Loads of test fitting!). I once again drilled small holes in the ends of all of the bars and then inserted a small piece of wire to locate them. I also added door bars which amazingly fit correctly next to the front seats.

The final photographs show the roll cage fitted inside the body and also the door mirrors added. To do the mirrors I added styrene positioned in the front windows and drilled a small hole through this and the glass. I then shortened the mounting arms on the mirrors, drilled holes in the ends of the mirror mounting arms into which I inserted some wire and used this to push into the holes in the styrene/glass to mount them!

Now all I need to do is fill a couple more holes on the rear and it will be ready for painting and assembly! I am hoping that the weather improves here fairly soon to enable me to do some painting! Still unsure whether to go for a bright orange of a bright green finish!

Re: Datsun 510 - Old School Racer Style

that's hot!

I'd go with bright green instead of orange.

did you just glue together the role cage parts?

any pics of the suspension in detail? it's sound amazing what you've done to it, but I just can't imaging it, as I've never seen a 1:1 510 in real life.

Thanks, still undecided on the colour!

For the rollcage, I drilled very small holes in the end of each of the plastic tubes. I then inserted a small piece of metal wire into one end and used this to push into a pre-drilled hole to dry fit into the next tube. Finally when all the parts were fitted as I wanted them to be I added gap filling super glue to hold it all securely in place. I hope this description helps! Next time I will take some more photographs during the construction process to help!

Unfortunately I forgot to take any photographs of the suspension during the modifications. When I do similar modifications on a future model I will take more photographs to illustate this. But basically beacause I used pieces of wire to hold the suspension pieces together it is possible to bend the suspension to achieve the stance you are looking for without breaking the plastic!

Looking good, the wire (kids toy support tie's) works a treat for positioning suspension set-up, a top tip that I discovered! I think bright blue would look good too.

Re: Datsun 510 - Old School Racer Style

Hi all, a bit more progress.

I have painted the wheel centres Gunmetal and the front grille in satin black. The weather here in the UK is gradually improving so will hopefully be able to paint the body soon!

The photographs are taken with my new camera which will hopefully result in better quality pictures than my previous efforts with an ancient camera!

This is looking terrific - are you going to paint the highlights on the 'Goodyear' lettering on the tyres?
