Re: I've Split the Case - Now I'm Confused

OK - I thought it was probably clockwise.

I took my Pull & Save Transmission outside after weighing it (54 lbs) and drenched
it with Engine Degreaser (a brand like "Gunk") and put into a big garbage bag,
sealed it up and placed it in my Garden Wheelbarrow.

I'll let it set several days and then go to a spray car wash
(I'll take a wire brush - thanks for the tip!) and attempt to clean it off.

It stinks...strange smell to it. (?)

I have to buy a Gear Puller now and order the Rebuild Kit ($172) and Clutch Kit
($100) from E-Bay.

Looking forward to farting around with it !

As per my usual, I will probably take a long time doing this job - I go slow, take lots of
pictures and cogitate whislt doing the work. No hurry. Until Spring that is...

Re: I've Split the Case - Now I'm Confused

Way - I went to a "inexpensive" local Tool Store to buy a Gear Puller and realized
that I don't even know enough to buy such a thing !

They have a Butt Load of them !

There is one like you used with a Flat Plate (2 sections) $40 and many with grappling
arms (small and large) that grasp the gear on three sides to pull the gear off
($12 to $89)

Even a big 12 Ton hydraulic one.

You used the flat-plate type.

May I ask why you chose that type ?

Since the Input and Output shafts are only 12 inches long, could I use the "grappling" type ?

DoctorBill

PS - I wish I knew how to move the shift rod input clamps so I could turn the
input shaft with my hand and witness how difficult it is to go thru the gears
without a load on them ! That would be very interesting to do....

Re: I've Split the Case - Now I'm Confused

The case is cast aluminum Doc, you might want to use another type of brush as you might make a bunch of little scratches. Nylon or some other hard plastic would probably be best.

The ends of the grappling arms are too thick to fit between the gears. Here's a side profile of the bearing separator (gear puller in upper left of your picture):

As you can see, with the conical profile even this won't fit all the way behind it will fit enough to pull them apart.

My kit is in the mail as we speak. I'll post the full thread by Wednesday hopefully. Then we can work on modifying it but hopefully there won't be too many gaps to fill.

Re: I've Split the Case - Now I'm Confused

OK...I will buy that gear puller.

Just got a 20% off coupon via E-Mail from Harbor Freight - so it will cost me
$32, not $40..... Ha !

I was cogitating while driving the 45 minutes to work.

Why can't you use the very same Gear Puller you have to "pull" the gears back
onto the shaft ?

Just turn the Gear Puller over (or conversely - the shaft) and make it pull the gear
back onto the shaft like you did to pull it off....?

Should work, I imagine.

...and you can go nice and slowly.

There is more than one way to skin a cat !

Or was that obvious to everyone but me ? !

Re: I've Split the Case - Now I'm Confused

Actually that's a good idea. The furthermost gears came off really easily so it certainly seems doable. Since the shafts are stepped you don't need a full 12" bolt to pull on because the gears will fit on up to the step, just maybe 5 - 6 " or so. I'll give it a try. Just have to make sure it goes on evenly but that's true no matter what you do.

Re: I've Split the Case - Now I'm Confused

Question - you said "The furthermost gears came off really easily..."

Apparently, then, you have to remove the gears from one end only ?

Can't take them off from either end ?

I bought the Gear Puller today - came in a nice plastic hinged case. $32.

Now for the long bolts....

Oh, and BTW, I just remembered that I bought a High Pressure Washer last Fall
from the same place I just bought the Gear Puller from and forgot about it.

But then maybe I shouldn't use it for cleaning the Transmission (bought it to strip
paint off my deck) so I don't pollute the soil with oil, grease and GUNK....(?)

Re: I've Split the Case - Now I'm Confused

Yes, they only come off one way because the shafts are "stepped" with different diameters for each successive gear. I'm working on collecting all my pictures together and taking more. I'll make sure I get some of the shafts to show the stepping. I'm waiting on my gears so I can get this done.

Re: I've Split the Case - Now I'm Confused

Are you OK...?

I sent you a PM.

Haven't heard about the Transmission for quite a while.
