the AZ starter may have burned out your starter relay.....new relay may now be damaged..... Last edited by j cAT; 05-23-2008 at 03:13 PM. |

I figured the problem out!
Ok, I am pretty sure I have this problem figured out now. I took the starter back off and took it back to AZ. The whole time I was looking at this starter I could see some pretty obvious arc marks on the ground terminal on the selenoid. I was like what hell you idiot you jumped the wrong terminals...but after thinking it through I was like no fricken way i jumped the wrong ones cuz it wouldn't have cranked then...still puzzled I had AZ test the starter when it dawned on me what caused the arc marks and why it was working until I put everything together and let it off the jack. When I put the heat shield back on, I put it on in the wrong position and it was touching both hot and ground terminals...hence the blown ing fuse, the arc marks, and why the paperclip was getting red hot...duh! This whole sequence seemed to be rolled right in with the existing problems, but in fact I fixed the problem when I replaced the relay and then caused a new problem when putting the heat shield back on.
I did talk AZ into giving me a new starter, after explaining to the master tech several times how auto electric works to blow fuses. He just couldn't understand that a fuse could be blown if power wasn't getting sent back to the fuse. He just couldn't fathum that a big draw in power from it being grounded out would blow a fuse. It was pretty comical and the customers behind me were chuckling at the 101 class I was holding with the master tech. So put the new starter in, carfully place heat shield in right position, replaced ing fuse and "wall-ah" starts right up. This whole time my only problem was the $10 starter relay, not the other $300 dollars in parts and hours of labor I invested. I will have to check back through this thread and see if anyone suggested to check the relay....I hope not else I will have major egg on my face if they did. I thank each and everyone of you that posted to this, it great to have someplace to turn when problems arrise. It seems this is a frequent problem with alot of chevy's and as I was reading other posts on other sites seems to be a major problem in caviliers and impalas...no start/crank. Maybe we could get a sticky somewhere informing these people to change the $10 relay, that seems to be working on and off...usually working when you take it in to get the vehicle looked and not working when you are sitting somewhere else. I read many posts with people having these problems. Again I thank you all, and hope to GOD I am not back here on this thread posting promblems with this no start/crank problem. |

Re: I figured the problem out!
thanks for the feedback....this will hopefully help others take extra care when installing their starters.....also remember to have assistant turn key to crank position and check for voltage at solenoid before replacing starter...also after removing starter check starter with jumper cables before buying new one....loose/corroded connections will cause damage to starter ..
