"One last note, whom ever buys a Cayenne won't take it off roading anyway, I wouldnt want to b/c it looks just too good to get it dirty."
Once you put it that way... the Cayenne is the biggest piece of crap ever produced by Porsche!!! Exactly what we need on our roads, another big stupid vehicle, used as a status symbol only and that has no redeeming qualities! Give one to me, I'll tear out all the interior and make it into a halfway decent utility vehicle!

First of all, let's not forget that Porsche have built tractors and 4x4's in the past. Did the LM002 damage Lambo's image?
Second, this is by far the best vehicle of it's type availabe today. The engineers used the stabitliy control system to de-stabilise (up to a point) the car to make it "drive like a Porsche". Sounds like fun ![]() Personally, I would take the shared platform Audi Pikes Peak in terms of looks though. |

"Great points! And of course German manufacturers and their engineers are the best in the world."
My grandfather was an engineer for NSU, and frankly I don't see your point! NSU practically went bankrupt because of an engine that wasn't, we'll say "baked" all the way through. Lets not mention just how bad some of BMW's products at about this same point in time where. I finnally saw one of these porsches, and I already know that nobody is going to use it as a utility vehicle, therefore it is practically useless.

I agree with 2strokebloke on this one. All it is, is a status symbol for the rich. Just something to fill the niche of REALLY expensive SUV that the likes of an X5 and a ML cannot fill. No one is really ever gonna take this off road, maybe down some dirt trail, but nothing muddy. (There may be some exceptions with the INSANELY rich) I guess because I don't have tons of money, I don't really see the utility value of it. Having a truck that handles like a Porsche? Why not just have a Porsche. Maybe its because the rich feel the need to have a higher perch to look down from? who knows, it just seems really silly. It looks ugly too. The wheels are too high, and I don't think the bumper and sideskirts come down enough. I'm not against people having tons of money, but I am against greed and people who are too much affected by what other people think. No one is gonna buy that Cayenne and say "boy, I love that car for its off-road ability, and I can't wait to start hauling lumber around in it." It lacks purpose. Sure its a brave move by Porsche, and I admire them for having the guts to make that move to making an SUV, but wouldn't it be more admirable if they had the guts to not conform?

So what if it probably wont be taken off road? Are more than 1% of X5's taken off-road? No Are more than 1% of ML's taken off-road? No Are more than 1% of Range Rovers taken off-road? I doubt it source: czj research The fact is people like an elevated driving position, and you no longer have to put up with shameful, and even dangerous dynamics to achieve it. The Cayenne is great on-road, great off-road, and luxurious inside. Sure it's a status symbol but thats just something all people are guilty of. Anyway, should Range Rovers only be driven off-road cos thats what they're made for? Who cares, theres obviously a demand for these cars. If they dont sell, then you can call them useless. Quote:

I don't see where the engine setup makes them have guts or not? Did anyone ever say that that setup was not conducive to a sports car. its just something they innovated. The idea that they conformed to making an SUV, just like 80% of other automakers because they make money from it, seems like the easy route to me. What would happen if they had never made it? I think a lot of people would be giving props to porsche for not being swayed by the popular majority, like the setup of the 911 engine, which is not exactly the most popular engine setup.

The Cayenne will not be taken off road by many- but if you are like me and feel the need to- thne at least you have the comfort of knowing that it can go offroad and do it better than most.
The 911 Carrera 4 is even a pretty capable car in the Desert and light offroad tracks- the gorund clearance ingibits it though.

exactly, the idea was non-conforming, the exact opposite of the idea of a Porsche SUV.

I dont know - it was conforming in that most manufacturers are now making SUV's, but very un-comforming in that no supercar maker had ever gone into something as risky as SUV's. We'll have to disagree on this one

How do we know that the porsche is any good off-road if nobody will take it there? we don't, and I don't care because in the end, it's still ugly and useless.
Also, no other "supercar" manufacturer has made an SUV?, then I must have just imagined the Lamborghini LM002.

POS? which of my favorite cars fits that description?
At least Yugos have been used for what they where designed to do. Anyway, an LJ20 could probably do just as good a job off road, if not better than this "porsche"
