Re: HD-DVD vs. Blu-Ray: I think we have a winner.

Damn I hope Blu-Ray wins. I have heard from just a few tech-heads that the thought Blu-Ray would come out on top but we'll see. If it doesn't, i still have the PS3 to play games on.

Eh, they both have advantages. Personally i like the idea of Blu-Ray as a storage device over a movie format.

Re: HD-DVD vs. Blu-Ray: I think we have a winner.

I don't think so. Putting both formats on one disc would be too sweet of a deal for the consumer. Then any joe schmo with a regular dvd player could buy HD DVDs and then not have to upgrade his dvd collection if he ever got an HD DVD player.

Re: HD-DVD vs. Blu-Ray: I think we have a winner.

ok another question. is there a difference in quality between an upconverted std dvd and an hd dvd? if there is, i would need to buy 2 of everymovie, 1 for my regular dvd players and 1 for a hd dvd player correct?

Upconverted? I've never heard the term in reference to the new HD DVD era. But yeah, I believe you would have to buy 2 copies of every movie unless you settled for watching your regular DVDs on your HD player. But that would defeat the purpose of having a kick ass HD DVD player

Re: HD-DVD vs. Blu-Ray: I think we have a winner.

if you put a std dvd into a hd dvd player, it uses an "upconversion" to boost the quallity to HD 720 or 1080. there are some players that will not play hd dvds but only convert std dvd playback to hd. so if i get an hd dvd player, an hd dvd will not play in a std dvd player, there for i would also need a second copy of the same movie on a regular dvd to watch it anywhere else right?

Re: HD-DVD vs. Blu-Ray: I think we have a winner.

Yeah the HD-DVDs definitely won't play in standard DVD players. Thus is the beauty of technology, if you want the new stuff you gotta let go of the old and shell out for the new. At least the HD DVD playershave backwards compatibility with regular DVDs. They could've really screwed everybody over and made all regular DVDs obsolete.

yes it does have something to do with it . plus where this tv and dvd player would go there is already surround sound.

EDIT: 1 other question, what kind of extras do hd dvd's have compaired to std dvd's?

Simple, Blu-Ray and HD-DVD simply have more capacity allowing for more crap and higher resolution.

Re: HD-DVD vs. Blu-Ray: I think we have a winner.

And I think the Blu Ray allows you to use menu options (subtitles, language, commentary, etc) and all kinds of other crap during playback instead of having to stop the movie, go to the main menu, then find the scene again. And I believe there are production notes and stuff that you can view during playback also. Or maybe its HD DVD that does that... or maybe both. Either way, like Polygon said, more space for more crap and higher res.

Re: HD-DVD vs. Blu-Ray: I think we have a winner.

well by extras i mean above and beyond the larger storage capacity, like insentive to pay more for the movie and player. if the only difference in playback is the hd picture i could just buy the regular dvd version of a movie and buy a $50 dvd player that bumps the quality to hd.
