Wasn't the Probe the illegitimate descendant to the Mustang?
Actually, it was designed to replace the Mustang due to the "impending" gas shortage, which, as we all know, never happened... (where is that rolleyes smilie at now?)

It is rumored that the 4.6L DOCH v8 was origionally designed to fit under the Probe Bonnet.........

Actually the Probe/MX6 was designed by Mazda, not ford. It was never planned as a Mustang replacement, that was just speculation at the time. Maybe you are thinking of the Probe Concept car, but that wasnt going to be a Mustang replacement either.

Actually this is wrong, kinda. Yes, ford thought about replacing the rear wheel drive Mustang with a front wheel drive Japanese designed car. One idea was to work with Mazda to create a similar platform that could be shared by both companies. The reason for this was Ford was concerned about getting caught in the middle of another fuel crisis, which made the consumer want economical cars, not muscle cars, at that time.

Once the public became aware of this, though many magazine articles,
the public quickly informed Ford that there was a demand for a rear wheel drive all American performance car. Ford quickly changed tack and gave their front wheel drive car the "Probe" badge. The probe was introduced in 89, and Mazda's version is know as the "MX6." So the "Probe" name itself was never designed to replace the Mustang, but the cars platform was to be the new Mustang. Only receiving the "probe" badge afterwards.

I do know ford was considering a more fuel effecient car as the succesor to the mustang and i also know that it was rumored to be the mx6/probe. However ive found no actual proof that the probe was ever actualy going to be badged as a mustang. If you look at the design of the probe then i think you will see cues from the many probe concepts that were being made long before the mx6 was designed. Why would ford make it look like the probe concepts and then call it a mustang? I agree it is possible that ford considered designing the next mustang on the MX6 platform but i highly doubt the production probe design was ever going to be badged as a mustang. Id like to see the source for your Info cause im interested in this topic.

I have tried three times, but this damn dial up connection keeps timing out before the file can be uploaded. I will try again later and see if it works then. Then maybe you'll believe me.

"I agree it is possible that ford considered designing the next mustang on the MX6 platform but i highly doubt the production probe design was ever going to be badged as a mustang." So yeah, I knew they were considering using that platform to make a mustang replacement but they never did, and the certainly werent planing on puting the v8 in there.

ummmmm

Did you read the same article as the rest of us???

Please re-read the top 2 paragraphs on the right hand side. It clearly states that Ford "quickly changed Tact and gave the front drive japanese engineered car a "Probe" nameplate"

All that was done AFTER the public was informed of this INTENDED move, and they then voiced their opinons........

As for the v8, Look at it REAL closely. It does fit nicely under a 2nd generation Probe hood.

Not to ket off subject.

I'm new to here and a base probe. In which is now a se. I worked for several weeks in doing a lot of mods to the car. Engine is bored, intake, custom 2 1/2 inches exhaust, j-spec cam, motorcraft performance plug wires(Costed enough),tranny shift kit,Yup thats right,perma-cool tranny aftermarket filter, run synethic oil in both tranny and engine. Not to mention the whole interior redone. For the cavalier running with the gt probe or mx6 BULL. do you know how bad I have ran off and left a cavalier behind. More than enough to make it look like the cavalier had nothing. I even out ran a z34 lumina with a 3.1. the race started on my way to school on morning. I was running about 60 and it passed me. I was wondering how fast it was funning. I got up to 80 mph. when i caught up with it. then i heard the guy kick it down. then i did to. well before I knew it, I was right on top of him. we both was runnig 90 mph at the time I pulled out to pass him. I passed him like he was setting still. he tried to catch up with me. but never could. I pulled about 2 car length's ahead of him before my radar starting going crazy. so I slowed down. A cop busted the guy for speeding. How do I know it was my cousin. Who had just bought the car.
