Re: Thor's Car Progress Thread: '90 TSI AWD project, parts cars, and the Cavy. 56k death!

! Jesus guys, I leave you alone for one minute....

Quick update. Work got rained out today, so I got to spend a few hours in the shop. Got some thread locker and got the flywheel in as well as the clutch, but the clutch was a pain the ass and a half! We got 'er figured out though. I got all the accessory shit stripped off and got the stock cams out, the FP2's are sitting in the cam cradles. I didnt get them bolted in yet though, I dont have any extra oil and I wanted to lube them up before putting them in. I also couldnt get the fucking last bolt on the fuel pump cover, so I put some JB Weld on it and put the 8mm over it and I'm letting it cure over night. I am headed out there tomorrow and that hoe will come out.

Thats about it, tomorrow I'll get the cams in and that whole side of the motor buttoned up, get the tranny cleaned and apart and get the center diff out, then the pumps changed, and maybe get the cables for the battery relocation done. If I get lucky I can weld the diff on Sunday maybe get the whole thing together. I should also say that DSMlink will be ordered by Monday night so I can have it here for next weekend.

Re: Thor's Car Progress Thread: '90 TSI AWD project, parts cars, and the Cavy. 56k death!

Another quick update, again no pics. Nothing too interesting to picture yet.

Yesterday I got the cams in and timing reset, as well as that whole side of the motor buttoned up.

Today I took a grinder to that stuck nut on the fuel pump cover and ground it the fuck off, then got the 255 in. Is the stock pump substantially larger than a Walbro 255? The one I took out was, but I couldnt find any markings or anything on it. After that I went to work on getting the tranny in, and did. I was going to get the rest of it done today too, but my friend came to the shop and we ended up doing our biweekly pipe smoke session and I lost all motivation to get it done. I have maybe like 3-4 hours of easy work left and it would have been nice to get done. I dont have any replacement tranny fluid anyway, so its going to have to wait until later this week. My aim is Wednesday, but with any luck I'll roll out of there tomorrow.

I think I may be doing an in car computer project soon enough as well. My buddy has a computer with wireless card, keyboard, and mouse that he said I can have, so all I would need is a flatscreen monitor. I dont know though, I'm thinking it might just be extra dead weight when my laptop will work just fine. We'll see.

Re: Thor's Car Progress Thread: '90 TSI AWD project, parts cars, and the Cavy. 56k death!

So here I am whoring my own thread again, but I thought I should update.

I did get it up and running Sunday, and to my excitement everything worked fine. I was a little scared that I bent some valves, but everything works just fine. I got the battery relocation done too, which made me happy. I'll post some pics on that later. I havent been able to do a good pull because of the 450's but it seems to run good. I got DSMlink today, but it didnt come with the socket so I need to order one of those, plus nowhere in town has a DB9 to USB adapter either. Oh well, I've got all summer.

I've relisted some parts and have a lot of interest again, plus a check coming hopefully Friday or Monday. I should be able to afford injectors soon enough, after that comes the JAW. I was kinda pumped on nitrous there for a bit, mostly because I thought it would be cheaper than a 50 trim but also to retain some form of "sleeper" aspect of the stock appearing turbo. What I realized today is that a used wet kit and bottle heater will be upwards of $300, plus then $35-$50 to fill a 10 lb tank. I figure a 75 shot at like 15 seconds per usage and a 10 lb tank will yeild like 9-10 sprays per tank, or 10-12 if I spray for less time. The way I see it, I'd only have to fill it like 4 times and I might as well have bought a 50 trim and had the power on tap all of the time. The other thing is that with a 50 trim I can sell my 16g to reclaim some of that money. Anyway, I'm back to my 50 trim plan, for now atleast.

I appologize for the lack of pictures, I've been meaning to take some every day since Sunday but it just never works out. One of these days.

Re: Thor's Car Progress Thread: '90 TSI AWD project, parts cars, and the Cavy. 56k death!

Well, I just thought I would update you all again. I've been kind of busy the past couple weeks.

First off, I changed tranny fluid not long ago. I was just running some generic 85w-140 gear lube from Auto Value, it worked ok until it got warm and then I'd hardly be able to shift. After doing a lot of reading I came to the following conclusions: A) BG Synchroshift: got the best reviews B) GM/Pennzoil Synchromesh: got mixed reviews, some people liked it some people didnt and had the same problem with it as I did with the Auto Value stuff, C) Royal Purple Synchromax: no where near as many users and not all the reviews were excellent, but none were bad. The BG stuff was nowhere to be had, and I decided to go with the Royal Purple. The reviews were right, it was a HUGE improvement, but the inherent DSM notchiness was still there. I was quite pleasantly suprised to see that it was purple in color as well.

As many of you know I have DSMlink and am in the process of starting to get it tuned. I got the 1000cc injectors in and started having horrible trouble with knock, which was later found to be phantom knock most likely from lifter tick. I havent actually started to play with fuel and timing sliders because I am waiting on a wideband before I do that.

Today I turned up the boost. I was under the impression that one revolution on the MBC was 1 psi and I was set at like 11. I gave it like 4 turns and sure enough I had to let off when it hit 20 psi and it was still going. I backed it out a bit and found it at 17 psi, just what I was looking for. So I went for a drive watching logs and making sure that it was infact phantom knock I had and I decided to go do a WOT pull.

I went about a mile and a half from home and let it rip. I got full boost a little later, but I think that is normal with cams. I got my customary ~4k knock but nothing in the higher RPM's. I got 'er revved out to almost 7k flat and ended up topping out a 95 MPH, which was scary as hell for me. I've babied the Talon until now and the Cavy is pissed going over 65, so I get a little shakey at the end. I was getting over 30 lbs/min starting at 5.8k and maxed at 33.4 lbs/min. Its kind of nice knowing that I am not going to have to boost the nuts off of it to max it out, its only got another 5 lbs/min or so left in it. I think I am starting to overrun the 1g MAF, the MAFRaw was not particularly smooth but once I hit about 2100 hz it was jumping all the hell over. It definately needs a tune, but its kind of nice to know how much ass it can haul. I'm thinking that I need to get the intake side of the motor taken better care of, I am still on the stock SMIC, IC popes, and intake hose. I think that is the next part on the to do list. I am going to be able to get a 2g MAF locally, so that will help. I am going to make another Home Depot intake again, rather than deal with that goofy intake hose. I have that FMIC core too, I think I am just going to snag a 2g TB elbow, some aftermarket J pipe, and a universal IC pipe kit on eBay. Now hopefully I can get all that and the wideband done before the north meet!

Warlock eh? Thats a good word Ned, thanks.

I do have a couple pictures of pretty much how it sits now. Hopefully soon it will go through some bigger changes and I'll post up pics of that. Here's from the photoshoot of a couple weeks ago...

Battery relocation:

Messy ass engine bay:

And heres the shop :

Quick update on the beast. I ordered a 2g TB elbow and the 2nd MBC for my DIY 2 stage MBC that should be here tomorrow, and I'll be getting a J-pipe from Tim at the MN meet. I also ordered my JAW today and will order FMIC pipes and a MAP sensor tomorrow. That should round out everything I need to get it tuned good and hopefully by the first of August I will have it all ready to fuck some hoes up! I am going to do an oil change and check the spark plugs this week before I head to Minneapolis for the meet, and I should do a boost leak test.

I just found out that BIR has a Wednesday Night street legal drag night on August 27th and I am definately planning to go check it out. Hopefully she is running straight by then! I'll get some pics up after the FMIC, MAP, and some tuning.

Re: Thor's Car Progress Thread: '90 TSI AWD project, parts cars, and the Cavy. 56k death!

Small update. As some of you probably know, I was thinking about scrapping the Talon project. I've been doing a lot of thinking and I've put too much money and time into this to get soft 3 weeks before the end of summer. I was also thinking about selling it this fall once its running, but I'm about 90% sure I decided to fuck that idea too. I'll just put it in storage until I get a spot to work on it. I have it all the way I want it and I think some people wouldnt like it that way.

So yesterday I started ripping into it to get it ready for the last couple weeks of summer, and the Street Legal Drags on the 27th. First things first, I need to fix the problems the car has which include: thermostat, oil change, put in the new fuel filter, change the front tires, and have it aligned. Though its not too pertinent, I decided I should figure out why my pop ups arent going down, why the power door locks and mirrors dont work, and get my interior back together. After that, the speed shit I need is the MAP sensor, WB oxygen sensor, and the IC pipes.

Though I think I am going to stay with a 195* thermostat, we fucked up the old wires on the cooling fan so I wired the AC fan to come on at the same time as the cooling fan. I got the old IC system ripped out and I got the 2g TB elbow and the J-pipe in too. The big thing I did in the past couple days is rip the dash out and finish my deletion of the sound/ac/heating systems. I still have the heater core to get out, as well as the misc shit on the driver's side, but I got all the air ducts out and blower. What I really wish I could do is have DSMlink V3 come out then tear the whole car down and completely rewire it for speed density in the route I want it with the various things where I want them, but I dont have the time or the money for all that wire.

The plan is to spend like 2 hours out there a day getting shit ready. I wont order the IC pipes until timorrow, so hopefully I will have thme like this time next week. I will get the MAP sensor wired in as soon as the PayPal transfer to my check cad goes through. I plan to finish taking shit I dont want out from the dash tomorrow and start troubleshooting the rest of the wiring tomorrow, and hopefully by the end of the weekend I will have everything done except putting the bung in the down pipe and routing the IC pipes. Here's a couple pics.

Shut up Dave... you're worse than ass! Yeah I know it was kind of embarassing showing it to you guys, and I didnt realize how nice it looked until I ripped all the shit out and mocked it up on the garage floor.

Tim, fuck no! I want to go to Punishment's shop and kick whoever did that shit in the nads! I dont know what the hell I am going to do about it either, I think a vice grips is about all thats going to get that tight... I cant fit the Allen wrench in there.

I think mine was stubby enough to fit it in there, but yeah, it really pissed me off too.
