Re: assault rifle or shotgun?

Well first of all I would like to say that I know lots about guns, for example. This is the Bio Force Gun (BFG) also known as the Big fucken gun. "Bio Force Gun version 3.14". This gun has no apparent magazine, suggesting that it is recharged in its special storage system. The gun fires a blue (rather than green) blast of plasma, which melts through its targets. It will burn through solid rock for several metres. The "Splash Effect" does not occur with this weapon, but if it hits a target, the plasma will expand into a large circle that will blanket the affected area with plasma and continue to burn away at the target for several minutes. I recomend this for target shooting, or for use in alien invasions..............

he's chosen two very different guns to compare.

unless you're going out to kill people on the street they don't share much in common in terms of useage. shotguns aren't the thing for long-range shooting and rifles aren't the thing for skeet (clay pidgeon) shooting.

if you were into target shooting specifically then you'd compare two rifles. similarly if skeet shooting was more your thing you'd probably compare two shotguns.

it's like comparing a motorbike with a car. apples and oranges.
DUH.

Of course they have totally different uses. (Which is also why I am having a hard time deciding between the 2.) But that wasn't the point. I know more about guns than alot of you guys do; I was just asking for opinions.

Re: assault rifle or shotgun?

i'd chose the remington for skeet shooting.the ruger for long distance target practice.both are good for 'defense' purposes, and are plenty intimidating if the need arises...i'd surely think twice when looking down the barrel of a semi automatic shotgun.

Re: assault rifle or shotgun?

Ok, I'm not gun-retarded...I'm sitting within 10 feet of a half-dozen of 'em but I'm no nut either. I just picked up what I know from my dad or my redneck friends from high school.

Anyway, for hunting I'd go with the mini-14. Better range and accuracy. I've taken deer down with my Rem 1100 without a problem (using slugs) but still... I'm only limited to a very close range of accuracy. Its really overkill for hunting though, but whatever.

Target practice though... on that it depends on what you like better. Trap/skeet or x-yard ranges. I used to do a bit of trap, but with school and all I haven't had the time...so most of my target practice involves my trusty old mauser. Soo... I'd have to go with the mini-14 again.

"home security" though... I'm sure by the time anybody breaks in and tries to attack you, you won't have time to grab the shotgun and load it. Knieves are better....so I still vote mini-14.

I'm such a hipporcrite though... I've got my 1100 by my bedroom door and I'm casually looking for a nice pawn'ed Rem 870

No need to be a dickhead. 200 is better than 75 but I happen to be proud of the fact that I can hit a bullseye at any distance. At 1000 yards it's possible to hit a target, but a one inch bullseye? At 1000 yards a 1 inch bullseye isn't even visible to the naked eye (that's 10 football fields). He must have eagle eyes.

But shooting a scattergun doesn't require any discipline - technique yes, discipline no. Next time you're out deer hunting try using shotgun slugs or sabots instead of buckshot. You'll find it much more challenging.

A good example is wickedly accurate though.
Oh, i'm not planning on hunting with that. I just want it for target pegging and zombies.

I'm not trying to be a dickhead, but do you even know what you're talking about? Banana clips? On a shotgun? wtf? And you're right, it IS more than 7... Your typical 2 2/3" 00 buckshot shell will have nine ~.33 caliber balls in it. Birdshot will have hundreds, but those are pretty shortrange and are used on birds and clay pidgeons. I dont understand how it requires technique but not discipline? Discipline of what? You still have to aim just the same as any other gun, except shotgun hunting is different altogether. Since the range is so short (even with a slug). Not to mention, you're not even allowed to hunt with a rifle in Massachusetts so...

Hmm, on second thought I change my vote to shotgun. Better for zombies anyway.

Don't get out much into the shooting world do you??

An 1100 is a very good gun, if your buying new I'd prefer the 1187 for the capability to shoot 3". I currently use an 1100 trap model for my trap shooting and I don't have a single complaint with it.

Scrap the Mini-14, just get a real M14.
