Wow looks like Tamiya got the underpan almost correct after all.

Ya'll are stretching now. The diecast chassis, ok, the 4-piece engine, ok, the not perfectly rendered hood opening system, ok. But you can always paint the interior, if you want, and I don't know what "blank" means.

I'm starting to think there are two aspects of this hobby.

A. Building.
B. Complaining.

In other news, your SLR is coming along really well. It's awesome to see it come together, and I'm glad we have someone going through it first finding the mistakes.

Re: TAMIYA SLR Mclaren (56K WARNING)

ya the interior is pretty toy-liked....the engine compartment can actually contain more parts. :S

Bingo.

You are correct, and it's evident in all corners of our hobby, and other model subjects. It's also nothing new

Builders build and show off, the vast majority of complainers seem to never get anything done. Using the "the model isn't perfect" as an excuse not to build. Though I've seen examples of someone bitterly complaining about a particular kit's flaws after building it, when I see serious flaws in their own building skills that are exponentially more visible (even with fuzzy pictures) than all the alleged flaws they point out from the kit manufacturer. "This is wrong, that is wrong, the muffler bearings weren't included and the shape of the Henway's fenders were all wrong" yada yada and all I see is rough paint, missing parts, sloppy assembly Um, yeah. It's all the kit maker's fault and there's no overcompensation going on whatsoever

Good lord, where has the fun gone when it gets to that??

Personally the pictures of the SLR look like most other OOB models, including Tamiya. You see it 3X the original size on your screen and it doesn't look good. See it in person in it's normal size and it will look just fine. Extreme close ups don't do an OOB model any favors.

The Enzo certainly has fit problems of it's own, from the fit of the closed doors in the roof, and the engine cover coming in contact with other parts keeping it from closing properly. The mis-engraved front fascia cut lines. This SLR isn't anything different from Tamiya, just a different kit. They hid the diecast chassis well enough this time that I won't complain about it anymore. My only complaint after seeing the model is the cost of entry-my previous criticisms were proven moot after seeing how they did the model. It looks pretty damned good to me. I certainly have done my share of complaining, but I've also built a dozen models this year, overcompensating for my complaining

I've enjoyed seeing this buildup review; it helps all the builders who want to do the best they can with this model. Knowing ahead of time where to spend a little extra time makes a huge difference. Other builders undoubtedly will benefit from it. I think we'll see quite a few of them built.

Re: TAMIYA SLR Mclaren (56K WARNING)

To me, it just looks like a model I want, I can't see anything really wrong with it?

As most of the time, atleast with tamiya, a low numbers of part engine doesn't mean it has to be undetailed, as this build shows us. (and for example the toyota GT1 engine bay).

I also think the interior looks very lifelike, with the digits and everything on it's correct place, it seems like they have done their homework pretty well.

As stated before, the chassis plate is correct to scale, so no complaining from me.

I guess it will build up as a masterpiece without changing anything to it, and it will be even better if you improve the imperfections!

Eh, well, it looks good overall, and to be honest I wasn't planning to buy one anyways, and I have to say the exterior and overall proportions look great, but what kills the interior for me is the shifter looks toy-ish the way it sits on top of the center console instead of "inside" it, and the buttons on the dash have no detail at all, just little flat circles.. I realize those are nit-picks, but that's just what caught my eye when I first saw those pics. I guess you're right though, those are a stretch considering it's something that a lot of poeple have been wanting. I'm sure many people will build a great model of it.

The JGTC Z car (Xanavi) doesn't have covers, and IIRC the Peugeot 307 rally car's chassis was similarly compromised. Haven't seen an NSX. Exposed screw heads = lame. Cleverly-hidden screwheads = what we should reasonably expect from Tamiya. I think they got the memo

Interior pics enlarged 3-4X over actual size and viewed on a monitor = people making incorrect assumptions.

View the model in person = typical Tamiya detail.

The enlarged photos trick you into believing the details aren't up to snuff. Everything in the interior looks fine, and with careful detail painting, some flocked carpeting and seatbelts (aftermarket stuff), it will be amazing. There's no less OOB interior detail here than w/the CGT or Enzo.

The JGTC Zs, NSXs and the WRC 307, they all have covers for the screws, but they kinda stick out like a sore thumb, since they were placed right in the middle of the flat underpanel. If you wanted to hide them you'd need to putty and touch up or repaint the underpanel after you've screwed the body to the chassis. The SLR does a slightly better job hiding two out of three covers as vents on the underpanel.

Re: TAMIYA SLR Mclaren (56K WARNING)

I have to say that they did quite well incorporating the metal chassis into the kit this time, but they have ruined it with that half engine. Although it will probably look great when complete, most modellers enjoy the experience of putting together a whole engine (or am I wrong?). I am sure it will look brilliant when complete, but it is not a scratch on the Enzo or Carrera GT kits, especially at that price!
