Re: 20 meter tidal wave kills 12,000 in Thailand!!! Breaking News!

To put it into perspective, the death toll is sitting at 21 times more than September 11. That's what shocked me the most.

It only gets worse from here on sadly.

Re: 20 meter tidal wave kills 12,000 in Thailand!!! Breaking News!

World Entertainment News Network:

"Martial arts superstar Jet Li risked death in the Maldives at the weekend when he and his daughter were caught up in the tsunamis that rocked Asia. The Hero star was vacationing when a 9.0 magnitude earthquake struck near Sumatra early on Sunday, generating waves of up to 40 feet high, which swamped coastal areas and claimed the lives of more than 52,000. Li and his daughter dashed to safety when a wall of water surged into the hotel where they were staying, according to family friends. The pair dashed to higher ground, where Li called his agent to assure him they were OK. "

The USS Abraham Lincoln has been diverted out of Hong Kong and should arrive in the next day or two. I'm not sure if the Navy will cut anyone else loose for this, but the local news cares only because the Abe is based near Seattle.

It's a humanitarian deployment, not a war mission

Either way. Letting the public know when a navy ship is to be expected in a port is not a good idea.

In terms of the wider implications........does anyone really give a fuck?

the toll counted so far is equivalent to

50 Titanics
or
30 Pearl Harbors
or
300 Lockerbie Pan-Am bombings
or
470 Oaklamoma City bombings
or
6000+ Columbine high schools

The worst is that there are still many unaccounted for,and many who will die of their injuiries and subsequent disease through the total demolition of even the most basic of infrastructure.Hospitals, roads, water treatment ,sewer systems...all are gone.

by the time you read this, the figures will be obsolete again. It will be months before the true toll is known. One thing is for certain...it won't go down.

Re: 20 meter tidal wave kills 12,000 in Thailand!!! Breaking News!

for those who are having difficulty understanding the scale of the disaster, and why the body count is still rising, check out this picture.

warning - extreme graphic

[color=red]link rerouted[/red]

As you will see ,there are too many bodies to count, and scarcely a soul left standing to count them.
The impact of the water has swept away everything in the ground floor of both buildings, knocking the right hand building clean off its foundations.

Scenes like this are repeated along hundreds of miles of coast, spanning several countries. Some of the regions hardest hit had precious little in the way of infrastructure in the first place.dirt track access and frail bridges are gone, all aid services will have to be airlifted in,as road and port facilities are non existent in the wake of thr tsunami.

Re: 20 meter tidal wave kills 12,000 in Thailand!!! Breaking News!

I'm not sure when the local news started releasing it, but I heard about it after they had already left. Additionally, in my experience with the surface fleet, it was OK to talk about where you had been after the fact, unless specifically directed not to. It may have been a Public Affairs release. God knows both the US and the military could use some good spin right now.

i get a 403 when I click on that link. If that's your server change the permissions on the Tsunam directory.

Re: 20 meter tidal wave kills 12,000 in Thailand!!! Breaking News!

The US Navy is now sending 6 ships to stricken regions, each one can make 90,000 US Gallons(about 333,000L) of fresh water daily.
