Does it stay running if you hold that gas pedal down? If so, Try this, Start the jeep and hold the gas pedal down (tach at about 1500 RPM's), does it stay running after you let off the gas. I had this same problem in my 94 5.2L and if I start it and hold the gas pedal in slightly for about a minute it would stay running. |

Re: 93 Grand Cherokee Startup Issues
Hi everyone, I know this thread is been out there for a while. However, I am having the same No Start issues with my 93 JGC 5.2.
CHECK ENGINE light does not come on, when I try to start the jeep. I can hear the fuel pump priming if I leave key in ON position for 10 seconds or so. The moment I hear the fuel pump, CHECK ENGINE light comes on, I can fire it up with no problems. I have done almost everything suggested in this thread; and there has been some really good suggestions. * Sprak is good (no resistance in coil; new wires, cap & rotor; battery good) * Fuel pressure is bang on * I am completely at lost as what to try next What is the link between the CHECK ENGINE light and fuel pump which enables of disables the starting up from taking place or not? HELP!! |

Re: 93 Grand Cherokee Startup Issues
any other symptoms, alarm going off, lights flashing? If so, alarm has to be deactivated.
If not and good pressure, pcm issue. Tom Denkler [email protected] |

Re: 93 Grand Cherokee Startup Issues
No Tom. Alarm system is fine.
I'm really interested in learning more about the relationship with the CHECK ENGINE light not coming on immediately when the key is turned to the ON position, like it used to. If I can understand this better, I believe this would help a great deal in finding the problem. Thanks again. |

I would start with the CPS it is the most common of the 2 and the cheapest. I would stay away from BORG WARNER brand parts (CPS especially) they are known to be bad 'OUT OF THE BOX'. Joe |

Re: 93 Grand Cherokee Startup Issues
There is a procedure to check for codes. Turn the key to on 3 times quickly without turning all the way to start.
leave in "on" at 3rd time you turn key. System will flash the "Check engine" LED 5 times, pause 5 times if all is ok. Will flash a code if not, ex. 3 flashes, pause 2 flashes = code 32,etc. Either way, itwill see if your check engine LED is working. Tom Denkler |

Re: 93 Grand Cherokee Startup Issues
Hi again everyone,
I am still trying to find my way around the CHECK ENGINE Light and it's relationship with the Fuel Pump. I thank you all for your input, but it does not appear to be any of the above. I keep reading a lot about bad CPS, but it does not appear to be that all. Turining the Key to the ON position without Cranking the engine, all dash lights come at first, Except the CHECK ENGINE Light.....after waiting from 10 - 30 seconds, I hear the Fuel pump priming and CHECK ENGINE Light comes on instantainously, and with that, one Crank...it fires up with no problems. I SHOULD NOTE THIS PROBLEM ONLY HAPPENS WHEN ENGINE IS COLD....IF SIT FOR A FEW HOURS OR OVERNIGHT, THAT'S WHEN THAT'S WHEN THE PROBLEM OCCURS. If engine is warm, I can turn it on/off as many times as wish with no issues. Does anyone know if there may be a grounding or connection wire(s) I can look at? HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

Re: 93 Grand Cherokee Startup Issues
Hey BW - I know this post has been out for a couple of years. But I have a 93 5.2L and I have the same list of things done as you listed below.
Did you ever solve the problem? If so, what did you do to solve it? Anything you can suggest? I have reached the end of my ropes on this... Thanks. Quote:

Re: 93 Grand Cherokee Startup Issues
hey all! long time reader first time poster. I have this same startup issue on my 93 cherokee 5.2 im not versed on jeeps i use this vehicle to tow the boat. I turn the key on and have to wait sometimes as long as 5 min for what i would think is a problem with a {main relay}the abs light comes on and cycles, but no check engine light and fuel pump relay till later, than magicly the fuel pump relay starts ticking for 30 sec or so the check engine light comes on and the pump primes once that happens turn the key and no crank it fires right up. my question is does a jeep have a {main relay} ? this comes from my experience with honda if the main relay on a honda is bad or going bad the same problem will happen. hope this stears this thread a new direction and all our jeeps start right away
![]() ill keep reading and let u all know if i figure it out |

Re: 93 Grand Cherokee Startup Issues
hi i have had a similar problem it turned out to be the drivers door has a circuit on the end of the lock cylinder (key mechanism) if you own one of these jeeps and have lost your alarm/key chain device you should know you have to disable the alarm by unlocking the " drivers door" first when entering the vehicle. Normally the flashing security light on the dash would lead you here but it does not always flash i would do this before spending anymore money remove the drivers door you will see a plug harness towards your left end of the door closest to where your door latch meets the body it will be labeled door/key cylinder unplug it jump the to wires in the plug on the ecm side this will tell the ecm that the alarm is disarmed start the jeep and your idle / voltage guage problems should be corrected if this works you need to buy a new circuit for the key cylinder and have dealer program for you at half of 1 hour labour only takes them 5 minutes you get billed half hour . good luck please post how you make out.

Re: 93 Grand Cherokee Startup Issues
I have a 94 Jeep grand cherokee 5.2 V8 and I have also had a problem with it starting in the morning. It would crank and crank with no start. After reading this post, I decided to try turning the ignition on,wait 6 seconds to cycle thru whatever it does, shut it off and then turn it back on and wait for it to finish cycling, and it starts right up ! Although it's not a fix, it's a great clue and at least I won't wear out the starter until I figure it out ! I also notice a clue that when it cycles, the check engine light responds differently sometimes. Don't know what it means yet but once I recognize a pattern, I'll post that.

Re: 93 Grand Cherokee Startup Issues
i would look into the fuel pressure regulator and i hate the extra cost but it really pays to get the parts from the dealer as for the last guy with the alarm issues it sounds like the alarm key switch has broken and fallen off the back of the lock cylinder this switch can also keep your interior lights lit up depending on what postion it was in when it fell of the lock cylinder and anytime you lose battery the pcm has to relearn idle strategy so its gonna run bad for awhile till it relearns

Re: 93 Grand Cherokee Startup Issues
An update to the starting situation, I noticed this morning that it appears that I first turn it on, I don't see the check engine light come on. If I cycle it a few times, I hear a clicking coming from the engine area(relay I assume),then when the clicking stops, I see the check engine light come on and then I hear the fuel pump prime. I am going to replace the fuel/Auto shutdown/and the starter relay, and see how it goes from there.

Re: 93 Grand Cherokee Startup Issues
Update to my update. I replaced the fuel pump/starter/ & autoshutdown relays but still no luck. The relay that is doing the clicking once I get it to cycle properly is the auto shutdown relay. I am going to try disconnecting the battery for a while and then reconnecting it. It seems odd that the ECM would deliberately click the ASD relay on and off repeatedly for any reason.
