Didn't anyone in the drivers ed class learn how much distance to keep between you and the car in front of you?

So, if accidents happen, do the cops ALWAYS blame it on the guy who rearended the guy in front of him?

3 car lenghts long, or 3, or more seconds in dry conditions, and 4 or more seconds in wet, and night conditions. Any closer is bordering on dangerous.

If you're driving and some is 1second behind you and you have to slam your breaks on because there is something on the road that you can't hit, or another car breaks heavily, the car behind you will fuck your car, and his car up beyond repairs, and possibly a fatal traggedy. If he lives, it's his fault.
2 seconds and he'll still hit you, just not as heavy, and it'll still be his fault.
3 seconds and he'll stop just in time with no damage...

I can see it coming, but please don't (anyone) say otherwise and contradict what i've said. Not only have I theory lessons in this shit, I took a drivers course on December 7th (Sunday) last year, and we did PRACTICAL lessons, which means we actually got in out car and demonstrated the 1, 2, and 3 seconds rule at various speeds.
I had to get to a certain speed, and the driver instructer would tell me when to "STOP" which required me to literally, lock the wheeles up, not just break heavyily. We did this for 2 hours. We also did pin-head's, swivles, and other shit. I have a few pics from the day.
We used witches-hats (cone things) and on 1 second, the cone got crushed under my wheeles, 2 seconds, and i hit it, 3 seconds, i stoped just in time before i hit it.

I slow down my self.

Actually, I tend to stick to the speed limit in slower areas and wait for a tail gaiter. They usually get within 2 car lenghts behind me, sometimes up to 1 car length, but I've only ever had 1 person who was between 1ft, and 3ft off my ass.

All that sounds extremely proper and correct but IMO it doesnt reflect real - world situations. If you're driving and have to lock your brakes to avoid hitting something, you fucked up. Really you should be scanning the road ahead at all times, so that you're ready for whatever it is that you have to avoid ( a car reversing out of the driveway into your path, a kid running out onto the road etc). 99% of the time thoise things can be avoided by just looking ahead and predicting what they're gonna do.

Also slamming on the brakes often isnt the best way to avoid hitting a hazard, in fact most of the time its not.

Re: Tail Gaiters???

I was tailgating someone this morning. Stupid fucker was going 25 in a 40 zone. I have no idea why people decide to drive half the speed limit on the ONLY road that takes me to work. I can't pass them either, it's a 1 lane road.

Re: Re: Tail Gaiters???

I just brake-check them. But just consider being on a bike and have some asshole soccer mom run up your ass. I had a BMW once that came so close to my bike that I could hear my exhaust patter off his front bumper. At least I'm not my dad... he had some stupid bitch tailing him when he was going 10-over. He stopped the bike and walked back to her car... hahaha I wish I could have seen her face when some 6'4" man stepped off and told her what's up.

Re: Tail Gaiters???

well, when it comes to tailgaters, gotta love them. I don't bother doing anything to people tailgating, with the possible exception of those ones at night, with their high beam lights on... but anyway.
My daily driver/work truck is an 01 dodge 2500 4x4 diesel. On this particular unit, I have a PacBrake exhaust brake. 195 retarding horsepower at the flick of a switch, and look ma, no brake lights.

So, about 6 days after I put the brake on the truck, I am beetling downtown to a chiropractor's appointment, and there is a young fellow in his riced out civic following a little too close. I put my signal on to turn left, about a block in advance, and let the brake take over....

Apparently it sounded something like, B__RR_RRR_R_R_R_R_R_R_R_R CRUMP. The young guy ran directly into the ball platform on my trailer hitch. Upon inspection, well, I had to repaint my trailer hitch, and he needed a new front end for his car. the hitch tore the hood metal right up the center, and he almost made it to my back diff cover.

All i could do was tell him that it was his day to get the "special" gold star.

This all happened right in the middle of the busiest intersection in town, and now, most of the locals take care not to ride my ass.

Justice.....

Re: Tail Gaiters???

if i'm pissed i'll slow down about 5 mph (depending on where i am) and then floor it. only time i ever tail gate somebody is if i'm on the freeway and traffic is going 75 but some retard is going 60 in the fast lane. i'll go around them if i can, otherwise i ride their ass for a little bit to send the message and then back off

yeah, everything is fundamentally flawed, even what i said earlyer...

But yeah, you're right. Inertia takes place when you slam your breaks on, and yeah, scanning a head always seems to be a good thing. But at night time, in rain, or heavy fog, that system is flawed. My main point was, that 3, or more seconds (depending on traffic, and weather conditions) is the most ideal for avoid a horiffic accident.

A reversing car does NOT have right of way here in sydney. If you stop on a street and want to reverse into a spot and you hit something, you're at fault because you don't have right of way. Anything in reverse here doesn't have right of way. They 'think' they do, but they don't.

Re: Tail Gaiters???

Slow down enough to get about 2 or 3 car lengths between me and the car infront of me. The person tailgating me pulls to the right or left to see around me and spots his opening infront of me. He speeds up to go around me and grab that space. I slowly slide to the left making him get back behind me or ride the shoulder and honk as he passes me. If he chooses to try and pass then just before he is able to slide in I speed up and close the gap. I'm usually in a full size Dodge Ram so there is very little chance of them trying to run me off the road. I don't get angry so I don't know if you would classify this as road rage. It's just fun. Especially if they continue to try to pass.

Re: Tail Gaiters???

Like most of you guys on here i tap the brakes or coast down to an insanly slow speed. Last thanksgiving some guy was riding my ass at about 3-5 feet away (i measured the distancefrom a similar parked truck). I taped the brakes while on the gas going up a huge hill but he stood firm. In the passing zone i dropped to 15 in a 45, the car behind him passes, but he didn't. I pull off and stop. so does he.
I take off onto a residential street about 40. I thought i lost him, so i find a place to turn around. In the middle of turning around he boxes me in from behind (my truck was pulled all the way up to the plants past the shoulder). He gets oiut with a 3 foot long wrench and winds up the swing right at me. I roll backwards, then he starts beating the hell out of my truck. By the time i got it into drive he shattered my rear window, dented the back of the cab and the font of the bed (which is structural). He also nearly broke my rear side window and took the paint off below the window. I never gott his lisence plate so the cops can't do anything. if he tried it a gian, i am going to be sure to have justice served.

No no..this is what you do (assuming you're a smoker, i'm not).

If its night time, open up your sunroof..moonroof..whatever, and take your lit cigarette, and toss it up in the air. the cigarette will hit their windshield and the embers will fly everywhere.

Re: Tail Gaiters???

i'll slow way down so they pass me, and flip them the bird.

I never do a full brake check, like someone else said i'll do it only so the lights come on, but i don't feel like fixing the back of my car cause in my 'bird the subs are close to back, and knowing my luck..they'd be all busted up

well Signal, you could get the same effect with a well timed fire cracker if you had a friend with you
