Re: Good Carbon Fiber Tecnique?

What dosen't make any sense is that you are saying that you think the SAS CF is crap, but a few posts under that you say you want CF that looks like Nis.k.a's.
IT IS THE SAME CF DECAL AS ON THE SAS WEBSITE!
Instead of just trashing a top quality product why don't you try to ask him how he applied his. the problem might be how you put your on the car. It is going to look diffrent when you lay it on the car.

There are tons of pics on this forum of people who used the SAS decals on their cars and they don't all look the same, in this hobby your not going to find some magic product that makes all your cars look like the real thing. It takes skill and advise from people who have done it before you. That is what this forum is here for. If your going to ask a question then you need to at least listen to the answers!

Re: Good Carbon Fiber Tecnique?

Cmon fellas, the guy is obviously a professional here. When he says SAS is crap then SAS is crap. But I think he's using SAS as a code name for some mysterious company or something and not to be confused with Scale Auto Style.

Re: Good Carbon Fiber Tecnique?

I use SAS CF decals myself and i think they are very good. You have to understand it's really hard to 100% reproduce a CF pattern on a decal esp it's 1:24.

And if you want to make it look realistic, you can airbrush "SMOKE" (the Tamiya colour) onto it. then clear coat it and it will look just like the real stuff!

SEE, jswillmon is one of the many guys I admire in this here forum, because he speaks the truth and nothing but the truth, when i started modeling about 2 years ago, I got really mad, because nothing started out good, or ended up good! So I joined another forum about 1 year 1/2 ago. I started talking to people, they helped me, they advised me and now I joined this forum like 1 month ago! This forum is great, because I can ask for help and they help me, I aslo help people too, I thank people and they thank me back. The #Whole point of this is that if you things aren't working for you, ask for help, just dont start talking crap about things that you dont know how to use, so just ask for help, and we might help you with everything we can OK?

this isnt meant to be a flame, but honestly... if he was an expert with CF decals, he wouldn't have posted this thread... obviously he has no real experience with CF decals, so you cant really say he's a pro at this.... yes, supermodel, you've been modelling for years, and you may be great at modelling... but you can't have enuf experience with the CF decals on the market to say SAS is crap... honestly, many many many people have used Chris's decals, and they all look fine...

I think he was being sarcastic

And to supermod04 - the color is actually called "Smoke" it is Tamiya X-19, not a "gunmetal smokish color" but I doubt it'll be of help because you need to know how to use it, just like CF decals.

Oh! Hello to all the model builders on this site. I am just getting back into building models and now that I'm 34 I have a bit more patience than I did when I was 12 so I hope with all the tips on this site I'll make some cars that'll I be proud of. Actually I just finished a Tamiya MP4/4 and waiting on my Tamiya Williams FW24 and Lotus 99T.
Cheers

i'd like to add my own experience to this thread as i feel that this bloke will complain about all CF decals. i can see where he is coming from though. i bought some bbr CF decals from a stand at the 'autosport' show in january. i peered at them to make sure i got what looked to be the perfect colour and pattern, well ok, there were only 2 choices, but i still took ages to decide. so i took this expensive (well, £3.75) sheet of A5 paper home and showed it to my mom...she couldnt see a pattern. to her it was just, well, dark grey. no matter what light i showed it to her in she could not see a pattern.

i think these photo's illustrate the point quite well. in the first shot the CF does look just like a shiny piece of gray paper. however, once you get close enough to it so that its effectively in scale for a 1:24 scale car it becomes quite obvious that there is a pattern. my camera was having a lot of difficulty focusing in on it though. it doesn't like shiny things

Re: Good Carbon Fiber Tecnique?

I have no idea who this Supermod04 character is but the contradictions in his posts are astonishing.

1. He asks what SAS is - then proclaims them crap?

2. Says of SAS carbon fibre "there is no weave, and it is just flat black". Err, sorry incorrect, perhaps you bought flat black decal?

3. After once again announcing SAS to be crap, remarks how nice a picture of a model fitted with SAS carbon fibre looks!

4. Changes his mind - now SAS CF does have a weave and looks exactly like the pictures?????

5. But it is still crap.

He did admit to not being a pro which is on the money.

I (and everybody else on this board that has dealt with them) know for a fact SAS only deal in top quality merchandise. If there is a bad print run or error they will scrap the lot rather than sell a sub standard product.

A challenge for you Mr Supermod04:
Since you are so keen on pictures, lets have one of your SAS sheet, or do you conveniently no longer have it in your possession?

Ok, maybe the guy don't know exactely what he's talking about or maybe he don't know how to order nor work with decals, maybe he's just a plain nobody who just want us to go nuts on this stupid tread defending the SAS guys but... maybe he just need another techniques than decals. Here's my technique (since I'm a little low on $$ but one day I'll order CF decals from SAS)... black airbrushed over the pieces, apply the Tamiya mesh (or any other), airbrush silver over the mesh then a thin coat (or 2) of smoke all over those pieces and voilą...
