Re: I wanna paint my dash trim body color! Huh.
Paint is really what you can afford and are capable of doing. I shoot all my paints with HVLP guns. I have several of them. I use base coat clear coat like what is on your car. Not everyone can afford the guns or the paint. SO you can use a spray can. I would experiment with a piece of spare plastic first. Make sure you surface is very clean. Also need to be free of armor all. If you can put the parts in the dishwasher or use denatured alchol. Then you need to sand the pieces very smooth. You want to make it down to at least 220. Then use a good primer with several wet coats. Don't be afraid to get runs in the primer. Sand the primer with 220 and give another coat. Then apply paint...dust coat first then wet coats. Should come out very nice. Most important is you keep the piece clean and there is no dressings on the piece. Armor all will fish eye the paint and make it peal.

Re: I wanna paint my dash trim body color! Huh.
that was really helpful man, but I'm still pretty new at this, I know that I'm a newb, but I want to make my car better u know. Y don't like to count on people to do it for me, i like to earn my way and work my way through it. But some questions though. When I take the pieces off, I have to clean them, what should I exactly use? also, when i sand it, what do u mean by 220, and can i jsut use sand paper? what paint is the best to use. Thanks

Re: I wanna paint my dash trim body color! Huh.
OK to clean the plastic. If it will fit in your dishwasher then put it in there. You will not believe how nice the pieces come out. If it does not fit there are products made specifically to clean a plastic part to prep it for paint. You can buy that at a auto body supply shop. If you don't have one of them then you can use denatured alchol. You can get that at Home Depot or any hardware store. Do not use laqure thinner or acetone those will eat the plastic. It is good to wear latex gloves while you are prepping the plastic also.
Sandpaper comes in many different grits. 220 is the grit to use. You can get it at any hardware store also but if you do find a local auto body supply I would get it from them in a 6' roll. When it comes to grits the higher the number the finner the grit. Like if you wanted to remove alot of material you would use 80 or 150 grit but those will leave alot of deep scratches. If you wanted to make something very smooth and shiny you would use 1500 or 2000 grit. Paint...are you going to use spray can? If so I would proably say krylon. There are also companies making paint in a spray can for plastic. Sorry I don't have alot of info on spray can pait because I do not use it. That is a personal thing nothing against spray cans. I think it is kick ass if you want to the stuff yourself and I think you are going about it the right way. Ask alot of questions and do research before you tear your car apart. You won't go wrong that way. Good luck

Re: I wanna paint my dash trim body color! Huh.
Thanks a lot for the help man, U answered this question in another forum for me, so sorry for asking it again, but one more question though, u told me in another forum to not sand it cause I would kill the vynil, but here u say to buy sandpaper, so I'm a little confused, can u explain that too me a little more, and once again ur vette has a kick ass interior man, I must say u should be proud of yourself, most people would pay to get that done, but it truly shows ur love for cars when u learn and try to do it urself, CONGRATULATIONS

Re: I wanna paint my dash trim body color! Huh.
I would not soak it overnight. That is not going to do anything extra and possibly leave a soap film on the products. That will defiently not let the paint stick. Need to use something that removes oils and evaporates quickly. Denatured alchol will do that. Bumpin...I believe you are in Tampa? Go to Finish Masters....there is one or two in Tampa and one in Brandon. You can get a product there made specifically to clean and prep plastic parts. You can also get adhesion promoters there for plastic. Use those and you will shrink your chances of chipping. Did you make it over to Bradenton for NOPI show this weekend? Do you hit any of the shows?

Re: I wanna paint my dash trim body color! Huh.
once i sand the pieces down with a 220 grit paper, should i wash them next or clean them with the alcohol, and after that, should i prime the pieces, then sand again, then prime again, then sand again, and then do the paint coat?

Re: I wanna paint my dash trim body color! Huh.
Honda...you want to do a final clean just before you paint. Now for sanding the primer that is up to you. The smoother the primer is the better the paint finish will be. Personally I sand the second coat of primer with 220 then sand the 4th coat with 600 wet. But I use what is called a high fill primer...it is very thick. I have not tried doing that with a spray can primer. I suggest a test piece and see how it comes out.
Also never sand vinyl. If you want to change the color of vinyl use SEM plastic and vinyl dyes. Sand your plastic parts if you want a smooth high gloss finish. Thanks for the compliments on my car. I am about to take alot of it apart and build a new amp rack/sub enclosure this time with a 10" motorized monitor and one or two NOS bottles...I will post pics when it is finished. I am also building new fiberglass door panels with a 6.5",4", and tweet along with a 7" monitor in each door. Should all be done and ready for NOPI.

Re: I wanna paint my dash trim body color! Huh.
damn that sounds nice, u have really been a good help since I've came to this forum. I have some great news, I'm bout to get a dodge stealth, and that is a replica of the 3000gt for all those that don't know it. I'm gonna post of pictures of the interior before I start working on it, to show u all the before and after pictures. I found the pic of a guy that redid his stealth's interior in white, with blue, silver, and black, it is the sickest interior ever. Now.... back to the question. I've gone to other forums and they can't answer my question very well, I though u might. What do I need to turn the stealth from an automatic to a manual. I want to try and redo my interior white and black, and the outside color of my car a dark navy blue. Ive been trying to get in touch with u on aim, but ur never on. Another thing. Do u know any good websites where they can show u how to exactly paint the interior, and what are the best products. Sorry for all the questions, but I have one more. How long did it take u to do ur interior, and can u send me pics and of the process of ur interior. My email is [email protected]
