I have heard that 20% of on-the-job fatalities for police officers are during routine traffic stops. Often, they will be standing to the side of the offender's car and be hit by traffic. So besides following the law you can make efforts for the pull-over to be as comfortable as possible for the police.
Make sure you are as far off the road as possible. If it's raining or inclement weather pulling over under cover would be nice. If not pulling over immediately, signal that you see them but are looking for the appropriate spot (no middle fingers please). Be as polite as possible. Don't try to guess why you were pulled over. This can give you more offenses on your ticket. Wait for them to speak to you. Don't argue under any circumstances. If you have a center console with a lid, leave it closed. This is somewhere you could grab a weapon from quickly and if the lid is closed it will give the officer more time to react (assuming you're pulling a weapon). If grabbing your info from your glove box, leave it open so they can see there's nothing bad in it. This one is ok to leave open because if you were retrieving a weapon you'd have to lean over which would give them more warning. Don't keep your info under your seat. Don't reach under your seat. When asked for your license and insurance, say something to the effect of "The license is in my pocket, and the insurance in my glove box. I will reach for them in that order." This gives the effect that you are an off-duty officer or the family of one without saying so. Sounds dorky but works. Remember - they are not out to get you. Treat officers with respect and they will reciprocate.

I know life ain't fair, but that Law down here is BS. I have the right to Bitch about it so yall don't be hatin on me. I think I'll become some kind of civil rights activist or something, Like MLK. In Texas, this is one law that is stupid. I have no ticket now for it, but I am thinking about doing something about it. It sucks that if you have a certain kind of car, certain kind of status-based on the car you drive, that you get certain treatment. I'ma bitch till the day that I die b/c that is the only way sh*t gets changed. I'll never be the first one to sit down and conform to laws that are unfair. Everybody else can just keep riding the "SYSTEM'S DICK"! :smoka:

Also, if you want to keep pissing into the wind, most people don't want to hear you complain about getting wet. And I'm not hating. Just being honest.

<RANT>Our tax dollars pay for the jobs of these cops. and what do we get for it? me? i get a ticket for wanting to make my car look the way i like it. unlike 150 watt fog lights and blacked-out taillights, my "mod" doesnt make it any more dangerous for the other motorists.
and instead of "protecting the peace" or whatever it is cops are supposed to do, he pulls over to write my car a ticket. to clarify, the car was parked at the time. yea he is really putting his life on the line for me. thanks office Martinez. my car has CO plates now. I've known for a fact that the laws in NY and CO require front license plates. but lets examine WHY they require such redundant identification: 1) If someone steals your car they might rip off the license plate to lessen the chance of a cop recognizing the license plate #. 2) red-light cameras, photo-radar cameras 3) license plates in almost all states are high reflectivity. they add a special coating. cops use this when gunning you with their lidar. they aim for the plates b/c they know they will get the best signal off of them. now, as for #1... thats just my problem isnt it if my car gets stolen. as for #2 and #3, they can just suck it. i already avoided one photo-radar ticket because it only shot my front (not like i was driving dangerously... it was an open stretch of highway anyway (hwy-36)). so i'd probably end up paying less in fines for not having the plate as i would in speeding tickets. Am i bitching? yes. do i have a case? nope. but thats not he point. the point is that while i respect many cops for putting their lives on the line for me, at the same time i'm tired of this BS of minding my own business and still having my own tax dollars used to write me a ticket that harms no one. If i dont pay by the 20th it gets raised to $60. its pretty obvious that the only reason half the laws exist is not to protect our safety, but to generate revenues because they know any rational person wouldnt follow them. how many of you have gotten a ticket for driving by yourself in a HOV lane? not me! ...yet </RANT>hey you dont get points on your license for a HOV lane voilation do ya? pardon any of the typos that may be in this rant... this keyboard iz gay :P half the keys dont even work. you need to press down on them with a clamp before anything happens. |

4) You see some drunk guy coming toward you but can't write down his plate # because you can't see it. And good luck reading the plate in your rearview while driving. 90% of the laws are only intended to apply to the bottom 10% of the people. Unfortunately it's kinda hard to tell who they are and good luck getting them to admit it.

yea b/c thats just what we need more of. women whipping out a pad and a pen to write down every person's license plate number who she deems to be an "unsafe driver" while driving her car. <SARCASM>Right</SARCASM>.
besides, wouldnt easier identification for the police be "[colored] car westbound on Broadway, and has no front license plate", hmm? |

I don't look out for unsafe drivers to write down their info, just to avoid them. It was an example. Sheesh. And what makes you think only women would do something like that?
BTW, I'm not just trying to be a jerk abt. this. I'm sympathetic abt. your ticket. I've gotten tickets before too, but sometime you just gotta suck it up and realize you broke the law and try not to do it (or get caught) again. I used to live in CO, in Canon City (armpit of CO).
