Re: Alero (Trac off, ABS, and Service Vehicle Soon lights on)

Had a bad wheel bearing and removed the ABS coil which was still good. I keep this coil in my tool box for the test.

No doubt! By the way, I ordered a Timken brand hub assembly this time. Not the sub $40 one from china. That one lasted less than 10k miles last time. Would not recommend a cheap hub. Got the Timken one for just under $74 total off rock auto. You can find discount codes for them online.

Quick question, I seem to remember that I don't really have to disconnect the strut from the knuckle as Larson17 notes do I? I thought it was just the hub nut, caliper mount(2 bolts) and the 3 hub bolts. I really don't want to disconnect the strut and f up my alignment.

Re: Alero (Trac off, ABS, and Service Vehicle Soon lights on)

No need to disconnect the strut.

My order...

-Jack up side of vehicle, use jackstand
-remove wheel
-place old screwdriver in rotor vent and prop it near caliper to keep wheel from turning
-remove large hub nut
-remove caliper bridge and caliper
-remove three knuckle to hub bolts

There you have it.

When you put the new hub on, I usually smear some anti-sieze on the hub to knuckle mating surface and the axel to hub splines so if it needs to come apart in the future, it literally falls apart (believe me).

Torque everything to spec when putting it back together.

Re: Alero (Trac off, ABS, and Service Vehicle Soon lights on)

Well, got it done in about 2 hours last weekend. The 5 month old chinese hub came off really easy. The hardest part is getting out the 3 knuckle to hub bolts. They were in tight as heck and you gotta be careful to not tear the CV boot.

I smeared anti-seize about anywhere I could think of. But I'm hoping this timken assembly lasts for the life of the car.

Timkin are a good hub. As long as you used a torque wrench on your axel nut, you shouldn't have issues.

Re: Alero (Trac off, ABS, and Service Vehicle Soon lights on)

Hi all,
There is an Alero 2.2 gx that i am considering of buying. It also has the Service Vehicle Soon, ABS and Trac off lights on.
I drove the car and It has a really good driving. Brakes are a little tough though.
Is it a dangerous thing to drive this car while these lights are on?
Does it mean the ABS is not really working?
There is no humming or any strange noise.
