Re: david-b's 95 Eagle Talon ESi-T Motor Build

Today was finally nice enough to work on the car. I installed the new BOV, tried to do my best to not have to cut the 1G flange, but that failed. I installed the 1G flange on a Greddy-style flange but turned sidewise so the holes were still there. Installed no problem, used Neds awesome gasket. Took for a run, thing sounds ok, I hit about 8 pounds, and the thing is sitting there whistling, not letting me build boost. Took it apart, gasket was destroyed haha. Back to the 1G. I still may install this other one, but would get a new BOV adapter.

Called my boy and decided to do some filming. Videos are HERE. Car ran like a champ. Was logging the entire thing. Probably ran a good 20 minutes or so. The boost controller wasn't dialed in properly yet, so I set the over-boost protection to 10psi. Car ran great! Close to the end, I needed to shift lanes so I down it to 3rd and move over, the car jerked (I think it was the over-boost) but made it in and the car was perfect still.

Getting off the expressway, I pop the car out of gear, and it dies. I start it back up while rolling up the ramp, and dies again. Ironically, this was the SAME ramp that it died when I blew the motor the first time.

I baby it home, each time car is in neutral it died. Made it home, opened hood, and see nothing wrong with anything. No unusual leaks or anything. Tried starting, same thing. Took a break to look at the log I took. Open MSTune, and log is corrupt. Open the file in a text editor, and it's blank :O WTF!!!

I let it cool down some, and she is idling ok now. Does have a weird noise coming from somewhere that I can't put my finger on. Almost sounds like the fuel pump priming at startup, but that doesn't make sense. I'm going to do a compression test when I find the tester and see what that comes up with. I'm kind of nervous right now about it. Hope nothing is screwed, but I'm pretty sure it is.

Re: david-b's 95 Eagle Talon ESi-T Motor Build

That gasket was made from a high quality anti-tear post office packaging material. I will bet that it tried it's hardest to satisfy your every boosting need, but your just SO demanding.

Hope everything is cool with the engine BTW.

Ya dude I must have pushed it a little too hard to blow out such a quality gasket hahaha.

I hope its all good too. I'm just here looking at it thinking how much I hate that thing sometimes. I really have no idea what's wrong. Like I said, doing a compression test and take it from there!

The motor is probably fine, how was the AFR under boost?

Re: david-b's 95 Eagle Talon ESi-T Motor Build

How can you think that the motor will be fine? It won't idle properly. I wish I had a garage, I'd be in that already lol.

I had the car running really rich on purpose. But I was hitting parts on the fuel map that I haven't hit before. But again, it should have been rich. And since the stupid log didn't work, I can't see what was going on

Re: david-b's 95 Eagle Talon ESi-T Motor Build

If the log cut off that means MS corrupted for some reason. Resend the firmware to it and burn the tune to it again. I have had this happen before.

Your not pushing the car hard enough to break anything

Re: david-b's 95 Eagle Talon ESi-T Motor Build

Ok so going to try reloading the firmware tonight when I get home and hope that is the problem. That seems to be a common problem, so cross your fingers.

Also, looking to get a new FMIC now. I was holding out on buying one until this one got maxed out, but I wasn't too happy with the temps even under low boost.

Ambient temp was about 40* yesterday, and although I don't have a log to see how high it was going up to, each time I looked at the laptop the IATs were in the 90s. I feel those numbers a little high for that little amount of boost and cold temps.

Re: david-b's 95 Eagle Talon ESi-T Motor Build

Jason, are you suggesting that the problem that Dave is having with the car not wanting to run, Could be caused by MS becoming corrupted some how? That's also ironic that the last time you drove it, it broke down in the same place. As if the problem your having is after X amount of time.

Re: david-b's 95 Eagle Talon ESi-T Motor Build

Yea I have had MS just randomly freak out and corrupt the firmware. Usually the car will not even restart but I guess it may have messed up certain spots on the map or something. It only takes 5 min to do so its worth a shot to rule that out if nothing else.

Re: david-b's 95 Eagle Talon ESi-T Motor Build

No Ned not time amount, just same place on the expressway it died. First time motor was just gone by then after giving it boost after it was already breaking down. Main bearing, headgasket, and/or low compression were all shot then.

Actually now that I think about it, this was also the same place on the e-way that the old downpipe that ended up being all busted decided to tear the last thread and scrap on the ground. Note to self - get off the ramp before Harlem Ave. lol

It was taking time to restart. And after it cooled down, I still had to give it gas to get started. We'll see. Umm, I don't remember how to reupload the firmware...

Re: david-b's 95 Eagle Talon ESi-T Motor Build

So some bad news. Checked everything with MS, and no problems there. Did a compression test this evening and result were not good.

175-140-165-185

FML! Not sure what the deal is, but obviously, not good. Not bad bad... but not right. So... got couple more small tests to run, and then the head is coming off.

When pulling the plugs, the tops were covered in oil. The valve cover I know didn't seal right, and that just proved to me how bad that actually was. So getting new gaskets for there and going to seal that up right this time.

Also learned that in IL (and most other states), all cars 95 and earlier don't have to take emissions testing, so EVERYTHING with emissions is coming out. I already don't have a cat or the rear O2, but the EGR and all the charcoal shit is all coming out now too. Excited for that considering everyone I know, buddies and family all got emission test papers. I was worried that I would have to pull MS, put on a cat, and switch back to old injectors and shit... not any more!

So long story short, Talon will get torn apart, and hoping to have it fixed and running from 1 week of tear down.

Re: david-b's 95 Eagle Talon ESi-T Motor Build

You could try a leak down test. I really dont think thats your problem though. Like i said on facebook mine idled fine and i had 30psi on 2 cylinders. You even saw it for yourself. That compression does seem a little low in those 2 cylinders but i wouldn't say its blown just yet

Wait a minute... Let me throw this train in reverse... Your having the same kind of idle issues I am Dave? We should be working together to figure this out so I can drive my F@&*$! car... That is really the only thing stopping me you realize...

I dont think its the same issue your having brian. Daves car was running fine then he boosted it and it made some noise and now it wont idle.
