Re: Recap of Japanese F1 fleet

Is the number plate on this Japanese or should I move it to the 'Rest of the World' thread? Either way, Y/N, does anyone know the chassis # (check out #011 behind)....

I think it could be #070.
I photoshoped the erased plate a bit and one can see an 8 on the very right I think...

The interesting thing about when someone Photoshops an image to hide details is that frequently the thumbnail displays the original image when viewed in Explorer on a PC. As a follow up to your post I went to see if any of the images I had of what we think is #070 fell victim to this "feature".

I ended up having three images in my folder of shots that seem to give a fairly good impression of what it says on the plate. I had never really looked at them closely before, but it appears to me that the license plate on the car we think is chassis #070 actually reads "70" - hardly a coincidence I think?

I looked through the other silver Japanese F1s I had photos of, and #013 wore an "89-96" plate. I have no references of any plate for #063. I tend to think there is one other silver F1 in Japan that we haven't really accounted for so maybe this new image is that car. I must say I am surprised that an F1 at McLaren didn't have the license plate covered or removed - very rare to see that.

It looks like it was taken just as #011 had its refit / before it went to the States....

Re: Recap of Japanese F1 fleet

Well - the car that was posted by Greg was registered May 1998 or later!
One can read following things on the license plate:

Red:
Registration center
Shinagawa (one of five registration centers in the Tokyo prefecture)

Blue:
Vehicle class code
3xx - heavy passenger car with more than 2000cc
NOTE: The triple-digit code was first introduced May 1998 for new registered cars in the big cities, by May 1999 all prefectures had converted over to triple-digit codes!
Between 1967 - 98/99 they used double-digit codes.

Yellow:
Hiragana prefix
One of 29 characters used for private vehicles with more than 660cc.
It's more or less a safety feature used to prevent faking license plates!

Green:
Four-digit serial number
If one has a single, double or triple-digit serial number, then the number is written as follows:
00 0x, 00 xx or 0x xx
In single, double or triple-digit serial numbers the zero is pictured with a dot!
Here: .. .8 = 00 08
