I picked a set up a few days ago for 2.49 from PepBoys. I drove home the last couple nights from work clicking the red light on/off several times to see how my eyes would adjust. No problems at all on either lighted roads or dark roads. They don't interfer with the guages either, I wondered about that since the needles are red.

Should make a huge difference on the trails.

I bought one of those small map lights..works like a charm as they have a weak deflector.....now we just need to make a road trip and drive without headlights.....

The point behind using red lights is not decorative. Using a red light vice the stock white light is to preserve night vision.

Thumbs up Great idea guys!

I hated the map lights because they were so bright. The red light works like a champ. They remind me of my submarine days when the bridge would "rig for red" during night ops.

Um, what's a "night op" on a submarine?

I do seem to recall something about concern that light from the interior could be seen via the periscope on the surface. Does that have anything to do with it?

I think the solution would be a big ass GSP with a dim green screen to drive from. Map reading while driving sucks !

What's a GSP?

And what is up with that picture? It looks nothing even resembling the Dutch/Canadian I know?

That’s half of it. The other is being able to see contacts at night without having your eyes adjust. In fact, curtains cover the area around the periscopes so it is completely dark.
