Re: 1994 454 missing and running on 7
Let me see?
If I buy a new 454 for $5,000 cost $1,000 to install. $6,000 total to get the truck running. Than I need to worry about the tranny and other stuff. hmmmmmm maybe a $17,000 truck doesn't sound to bad... I am wondering if I can sell this 454 to somebody that might need some parts for it. Than if they pull the engine out. I can have it towed some place to have the new motor put in, to save in labor to pull the old motor out.... hmmmm...lol |

Yeah, if you have 17k laying around for a new truck.
You could pull the heads and see what is happening. I forget now, what were you doing when it started acting up? Ripping on it? Did you hear any pre-ignition or pinging? I am sure you could do a rebuild on it for 1000 or less if you do all the work yourself.

Not really....

Just paid $90 bucks for the shop to tell me that the #3 & #4 cylinder has less than 80 psi. So I am really only driving a 454 v6. The shop quoted me $2500 for a rebuilt 350 and $1,000 to install. The shop was telling me just to pull the 454 and put in a 350. Or I could go new 350 for $3500 and $1,000 for install. The shop told me they can get rebuilt engines from some place in Texas. Still in limbo....I am guessing it is either rings or valves? It is on the opposite sides of the engine also so its not a head gasket as of yet. This truck is my daily driver so I guess to pull the valve covers off would be pretty easy and quick, at least I can check and see if the valves are toast? Than I can put it all back together on a weekend and still drive it TILL IT GOES BOOM. So if it is some issues with the valves that I can see when I take the covers off, Can I just take in my heads and have them rebuilt? Or do they need the whole truck? |

Re: 1994 454 missing and running on 7
If your shop could do a leakdown test and tell you exactly where your compression is going that would be the best thing. If its coming out the dipstick it would be a bad ring or piston. Out the exhaust or intake and you have bad valves. In which case you could pull the heads off your self and bring them to a place that rebuilds them. (autovalue will around here).

Thanks for the advice about the leak down test, I'll check the shop and see if they can do it. |

Re: 1994 454 missing and running on 7
Sounds good! Good luck, keep your fingers crossed it is a valve.
