How come bigger exhaust is better for a turbo? I thought that smaller was better because it made the exhaust flow through faster and spooled the turbo up quicker.

It is more beneficial to have a larger piping b/c it will help the turbo spool up quicker, and help scavenge the exhaust gases quicker.

I would say, if you are going turbo in the near future you might as well get the larger piping. It will hurt your performance now in the low end, but when you get the turbo it will be more beneficial.
Scavenge=disperse, get rid of.
