sorry - forgot to update this. i got it running, then pulled off each of the plug wires at the cap one by one. turns out it's the #3 cylinder. i'm going to try a new wire on the off chance that that's what it is, but i seriously doubt it. i'd still have to take the whole thing apart again to see what's really going on (assuming it's not just the wire), so i doubt it's worth it.
