If you haven't yet found the problem: I had blender noise coming from my 98 explorer, started out it was hardly noticable, then it was and then it became quit annoying, then it quit. I mean it stopped completely and for a moment I thought the car had self cured. Then I realized that I had just run over my fan belt and the engine temp guage was on its way to the destruction zone. Check the routing pulley for bad bearings. Its a fairly inexpensive fix, provided you get it before your stranded somewhere.

I disagree, what you are decribing sounds like a torque convertor. Mine sounded the same and i changed the torque convertor and the noise went away. Hope this helps. These explorers i am finding, are pieces of junk!!!!! I will never own another one.
