I agree, panel lines on Tamiya kits are pretty week, as can be Fujimi's. The tow hook cover and gas tank on Tamiya's Boxster and 911 models quickly fill up with paint. That's one thing (maybe only one) that I like about Revell-Germany models. The panel lines are so deep that I can build up paint and not even darken the panel lines!

Also, must be a Tamiya error if they molded a canister style oil filter!

no, to defend tamiya and 360spider a little, the mold is correct in appearance. it is similar in size and shape to a canister, however when you unscrew it there is a cartridge to replace inside.
unless you seen have seen one it would be very easy to mistake one for the other.

Really? I just finished this Tamiya 600SEL model, and since i suck at panel lines, I dont do them. I have 1 coat of black primer and 4 coats of Tamiya silver leaf, and 3 coats of clear. My panel lines still look well defined. Most of my kits are Fujimi, but i have a Tamiya Lancer Evo , old school Toyota Soarer, and a Jaccs Accord. Their panel lines still show under alot of coats.

Well, depends on the kit I guess. The ones I've been building lately seem like they have very faint panel lines.
