Re: 1999 Taurus Key Fob & Door Lock Problems!

I've never heard of anyone needing to have the GEM replaced and don't recall ever reading about it on here, so it wouldn't surprise me that the dealer doesn't have much experience with it. Hopefully that will fix your concerns.

Re: 1999 Taurus Key Fob & Door Lock Problems!

Well according the the Ford service dept. it didn't fix it. They supposedly hooked the computer up and said the GEM module was OK, there must be a wiring problem! So I told my daughter-in-law she needs to call the dude who worked on it last. It went in with the power windows not working and left with the keyfob not working. He said that's how he fixed it, but don't know who to believe! Not really comfortable with the Ford folks either to be honest--cost me $85 to tell me they couldn't fix it! I hate working on something someone else has already messed up!! So many relays and modules under the dash--very complicated.

The saga continues!!

Thanks for the follow up. Unfortunately you couldn't say that it fixed the problem.

I know what you mean about working on things others have messed up. My new car is still under warranty, but I had letting the dealership work on it. Not that it has many issues or that I've had any negative experiences yet, I just doubt they will pamper it nearly as much as I do.

Re: 1999 Taurus Key Fob & Door Lock Problems!

I ran across this thread and have a question about the key fob...if its a factory key fob what happens when you press the lock and unlock buttons? Does the horn sound when you lock and unlock the doors? Do the lights flash? Or is it a combination of both?

Are you asking for your own understanding, or asking specifically in the case of the bcsman's issue? Some of the features are programmable, so if you're asking how it should work, the answer is, "it depends."

Re: 1999 Taurus Key Fob & Door Lock Problems!

Hi all. i`m glad i found this site I have a question about unlocking doors with the keys.
i usualy use the key fob to unlock my doors, today i tried getting in with the key and it wouldn`t unlock the doors. I have 3 keys and none of them worked is there anything electronic that might be stoping it from working? my wife said she has used the keys before . oh by the way i have a 1999 taurus wagon
thanks in advance

Have you tried the key in just the driver's door, or have you also tried the passenger door and the rear lift gate?

Re: 1999 Taurus Key Fob & Door Lock Problems!

I trust one of the keys you tried is one that your wife has used successfully before. Have you tried wiggling the keys a bit when turning or pulling out slightly on the key? Do the keys show any signs of significant wear? You might try spraying a bit of penetrant into the lock cylinders then working them with the keys to see if that has an impact. Just be sure to wipe off the key before sticking it in your pocket or back in your wife's purse.

There shouldn't be anything electronic in the lock cylinder to keep it from working, and if the power locks still work, the linkage shouldn't be bound up and preventing them from working. The key part of the locks is completely mechanical.
