Re: Studio27 1/20 Honda RA-107
Wow, incredible to follow along your work. I envy your patience and skill in applying all those decals. Great job on getting all the weaves to line up. You also have fantastic results from the clear you're using. Everything looks great, although I do think you should flatten the suspension a bit. At the 2007 British Car Show I saw the Honda F1 up close and the arms look practically flat...like just below semi-gloss, if you see what I mean.

finally a update... not much though I mainly worked on the remaining CF parts and experimented with different clear coats. I sanded all parts with 3000 grit sandpaper to get a really smooth surface and then sprayed one layer Gunze semi gloss clear. I think they look quite good now. I also painted most of the other suspension parts but they still need some silver paint to recreate the heat shielding (I guess that is what the metal parts are for?). ![]() ![]() The seat was also sprayed with some semi gloss clear and a bit detailed with some tape, the edges are highlighted with some chalk. I am not quite happy with it yet but I will continue with the seatbelts and decide if I need to change it.. ![]() ![]() the pic below probably shows the semi gloss "effect" best, it is kinda hard to photograph... ![]() ![]() Next step will be applying CF decals to the undertray and then clearcoat it aswell as other CF parts like the brake "ducts". My biggest problem is still the rear wing, I don't know the assembly is really annyoing... it just won't fit together . And the steering wheel doesn't look good either... Oh well my goal is to finish the kit before the Melbourne GP at the end of march because after that my time for modelling will be pretty much non existing for atleast 8 weeks but I am afraid that will be quite hard to accomplish... Re: Studio27 1/20 Honda RA-107
Looking awesome. Could I request some more info on the CF work, eg, how did you do the A arms - one piece? multiple? wrapped around? how much overlap (or gap)? does the bottom look as good as the top?, etc. I'm always waiting for someone to show the gory details, but no one ever does! Anyway, it really looks good, the amount of gloss is nice too.

thanks for the comments!!

. All suspension parts are usually covered with 2 CF pieces, one for the top and one for the bottom. So they are not wrapped around since that would be extremely difficult to get right. But if you use one piece for the top and one for the bottom you pretty much just lay them down on a "flat" surface which makes the applying easier. I made templates for each part like I did for the "wings" on each side of the sidepod (see page one for details). I simply put the part on the CF sheet and used a pen to "copy" the outline, I then cut it out and applied them. There was usually not much trimming necessary but if I discovered during the application that it somehow doesn't work (wrinkles, to complex shapes etc..) I tried to correct the templates and tried it once again. When there were overlaps I used a new blade for my cutter and carefully cut it away. Both sides are covered with CF decals and they look the same. But just to be sure to really get a good top finish on the suspension parts I always started with the bottom, so if there were any overlaps or bad allignment it wouldn't show that much. I hope that answers your question and if you have anything specific you want to know... just ask ![]() You can see the "templates" I made for the suspension arms on the pic with all the "leftovers"

Re: Studio27 1/20 Honda RA-107
Awesome! Thanks so much. Follow up Q: So I guess along the edge there is a break in the CF pattern (maybe not on the almost flat parts) - is that sort of thing very noticeable/bothersome? Do you need to work hard to avoid it, or just say screw it, the 1:1 would look like that anyway!

![]() Last week I started with the undertray -> sanded, 1 layer Finishers Power primer, followed by Tamiya grey primer, Zero semi gloss black and then finally the CF decals. So far I finished the top side which took me about 4 hours... The hardest parts were these "bulbs" (which are really high by the way and annoying for CF decals ) on each side, there was no way to do that part with 2 seperate decals since there would be no way to get the pattern right so I had to try my luck with one big decal and to be honest I am quite relieved that it worked out in the end.I will clear it after I am done with the bottom. Since the pattern is not visible on all "preview" pics I also post some high-res pics again, each is about 700kb. ![]() click for high-res ![]() ![]() It looks like there is quite an intrest in how I work with the CF decals so I decided to post some pics of the templates, they are done like I described in one of my last posts. It shows some of the templates I did for the undertray, these are not all but they give you a good idea on how I did it. ![]() more CF work on the brake ducts (or whatever these complete parts are called ) And I finished the brake discs, they are not detailed and completely wrong compared to the real thing so I just left them like this since they will be pretty much hidden anyway...![]() ![]() again one pic of the CF templates for the front brake ducts (the ones with the round shape, the triangular is for the rear) ![]() After finishing up the suspension parts for the rear suspension I started to assemble the "fake" engine . The top suspension part is not glued yet just incase I run in any trouble when attaching the brake assembly. ![]() click for high-res ![]() click for high-res ![]() that's it for now...
