Re: New toy
Yeah if I were to go for another civic it would likely be an EG hatch. I would sacrifice it being heavy as hell for the look, Done right I think they can look pure sex. And the tailgate is awesome.
I don't mind my hatch but I just have to tell myself its half a crx lol. I would love another crx, this time to be done entirely by me the way I want, and quality work. Like my hatch is now... If I didnt get an eg or a crx I have been thinking alot about the AWD platforms, and I think I could grit my teeth and drive an ugly wagon as long as the damn thing was turbo and I could make evos cry. Also, I would laugh my way to the finish line if I could find a 5spd 4wd CRV, I saw one once with a turbo b18c1 running in the 12's. That would be the most bad ass small suv/ grocery getter. Id lower it down and do a nice suspension setup and autocross the hell out of it. I found ONE on ebay, and it wasnt too far from me. But 5k is out of my range for the base of a build...maybe the final cost down the road.

Re: New toy
Why not run a Bseries powertrain w/ the AWD setup from a totaled CR-V on your hatchie?
Imagine it... lighter, more powerful, and still AWD... and it's still a pretty unexpected mod, but it's been done, and there are FAQ's to cover it. The wagovan swap has been done, and so has the CR-V swap... and I think ppl have even used the WagoVan rear w/ the CR-V tranny, just changing something about either the viscous coupler or the tranny-coupler shaft. Oi... we're kinda jacking this thread tho...

Re: New toy
Yes were steering a bit off topic. But anyway the crv drivetrain wont really fit in the hatch, its huge in comparison and you basically have to cut the floor out of the car.
I would totally do the drivetrain conversion on a hatch though. id like ot do a crx but then you have to go to the trouble of having the driveshaft re sized, oh well. Ans yeah ive seen a crv done in an eg and a wagon done in a hatch. Epic tuning did a 400hp turbo z6 on stock internals with the setup.

Re: New toy
well back on topic hahahaha just kidding i dont mind going in a diffrent direction with the thread. anyways i found out a bit more about the engine and what was done to it the guy previously worked at head works, a local machine shop, and went through the head completly, agressive port and polish, lightened valves,im not sure what cam he put in it but it is not stock. he had high compression pistons in there but had problems trying to get them to seat right so he went back to stock but i belive the block was bored 10 over. the bottom end was fully built, the crank was balanced aswell as aftermarket bearings. the tunning was done by a company called JET.
the funny part is that the interior was all done in 1988 and the motor wasnt long after that, i guess you could call this guy a pioneer as he was doing all this before tunning imports was really thought about much. that leather still looks great for being 20 years old. i got the origanal seats for the car, they were wrapped in lether also but have a bit of wear and tear on them. apprently the recaros that are in the car currently were bought to go into a ferrari but did not fit, so they made there way into the rex. put some new tires on there and did an alighment at school on it and everything was pretty much in spec except the toe. so it fights me a lot less going down the road after making the adjustments. also fixed the gas gauge that was in-op, turned out to be a broken wire down by the tank. today im doing a timing belt and water pump as it started screaming at me last night. i think that i will end up selling it when i get the title as i really need to get my other civc back on the road and a winter car. i really hate to as i doubt that i wiil ever find anythng like this again for the price i paid. i havent looked into the zc head going on the car but that might be intersting, but at the same time hate to have all the work that went into the ew head to go to waste. Re: New toy
You could probably sell that ev/ew head if you wanted to do the ZC head swap... but you'd be making the same power or less w/ a stock ZC head than you are w/ the modded head that's on it.. so I guess it wouldn't really be worth the time or headaches that it can cause.

Re: New toy
yeah i was thinking it wouldn't be worth the trouble, but it would be nice to
move up a bit to the zc and get rid of all the vacuum controled crap under the hood. i pretty much have everything to do the swap lying around. the car is pretty quick as it is, but i still like my hatchie way more. all that aside it is a pretty sick car. buying sombodys finished project is fun for about a week then things seem to die off pretty quickly. and i say finished as in there is no way i would be able to come up with the money to do anything beyond what has been already completed. paul

Re: New toy
Well, depending on what all work was done, the EW/EV might be making the same power as the 1.6 would.. or pretty close... I mean, the D16A1 swap only makes like 118 HP max... I think 109 is a pretty realistic figure, considering how many miles will be on the engine, and accounting for wear, unless you rebuild it.
If you were to rebuild it, a nice 11.5:1 C/R w/ ZC cams and a header/exhaust tuned for E85 would probably kick some major ass... you should be pointing out about 150 HP there, on stock parts... keep it carb'd, if you wish, still running e85 through a nice little weber that's rejetted to handle alcohol. (E85 is extremely tolerant to high compression, and supposedly has the same or more BTU's as gasoline.) Not to mention that when you get into really high CR's, you're running more efficiently than you normally would be... so you'd still be getting decent mileage, on cheaper fuel, with more power... how could you pass that up? BTW, there would be two ways to retain the carb for a ZC... you could either use the ZC/'teg carb manifold (very hard to find). Or you could get an adapter to use a standard D-series manifold, use any MPFI manifold, and use a side-draft. (Weber makes those too)

Re: New toy
Eh, that's even better... it would be a cheaper build.
It would take nothing to build the engine the way I described... especially if you already have the engine... ~$150 for a piston set, and about $300 for a "turbo" rebuild kit from eBay (I've used them, they're fine) that comes with Vitara pistons, which you can re-sell for at least $50. Other than that, a Chipped PM6 and tuning software, some re-wiring... you could probably wire up and swap in the motor in a weekend... and it would only be about $750 for everything. You could also pop a D17 crank in there, w/ stock PM7/P29's.. that would give you 12.3:1 CR if the zealautowerks calc is good... I'm doubting it myself, since when you put a bigger bore in, the thing ups the compression number... which is exactly the opposite of what would happen in real life... But either way, 12+:1 CR would be a bitch to tune for w/ that combination.

Re: New toy
If I had the opportunity to buy something like that, I would in a heart beat, and I would keep it, not sell it. Sure you could turn around and spend that money on your hatch, but thats one clean CRX that has already had a nice amount of work put into it, and even if it would need a little bit of work to make it reliable(not saying it does, I'm tired and too lazy to go back up and read), I would use it as a daily while I get my hatch fixed.

Re: New toy
I gotta say I"m with Tony on this one... I wouldn't flip it just yet... save it for awhile, get your fun from it, and when the hatchie is fixed, make the decision if you want to flip it or play it out.

Re: New toy
I kinda liked the stock blue interior that my white 3g CRX had.
I wish I could have stored that car for a lil longer until I found the company that my wife's father used.. they could have gotten me a title for it.. and it was MINT. No rust, southern body, complete NEW interior, not cleaned up pieces, rebuilt EW 1.5 liter, carb'd. All stock, new clutch, new tranny seals, all new suspension parts, full ES urethane kit, modded T-bars and adjustable RPH bar. The glass was perfect, the interior was perfect, I just needed to get the plastic fenders fixed (small cracks, turn big eventually), the plastic header panel was perfect, and I needed to build an exhaust for it... I was going to retro my 2g CRX exhaust to fit it. (somehow.) Shit, even the seats were NEW pieces, bought from a local Honda dealer... the guy that I bought the car from put well over $3000 into just getting the chassis into perfect order, with no engine/trans or axles, etc. I paid $600 for that one and a Donor rustbucket CRX to take a fresh engine/trans and axles from. He was building the car for his wife, who then divorced him and took him for just about everything, so when she asked for him to finish the car, he sold it for whatever I could give him just to spite her. I love spiteful people.. No matter though.. it's gone now. I couldn't store it any longer, and it had no title from the owner that I bought it from, he only had a BOS from GA where the bare chassis was purchased... I could have gotten a title from one of those "classic car resto title" places... but I couldn't find one that did imports at the time... Go figure.

Re: New toy
well the thing is if i decide to keep them both, witch the hatch is staying for sure, i would have to drive one in the winter. im kicking myself for selling my corrola and my subaru but if i didnt i probly wouldnt have this rex. im sure i could keep it clean if i had to drive it in the winter, there is a lot of plastic on the 1g and ive had it almost 2 weeks and it has 3 coats of wax on it from me alone, well me detail buddy that is. detailers just love it when every pice of your interior is wraped in leather and they have to go fondle every inch with leather conditioner. but anyway i dont know if i want to do much with this motor. it would be cool i must say, but having 750 laying around just wont happen. i still have a semster left of school and i still have a bunch of tools to buy, 50 percent discount with MAC and Snap-On is freaking sweet, 60 percent with mac they day of the tool fair. and im thinking of going back and taking the welding program also so that would be another almost 2 years of school.
i think i will end up keeping it and toughing the winter out with one of the cars but as of now the rex is the only running car. the rex right now stumbles around idle ever once in a while other than that it runs great. as is, it is about as fast as 91 accord manual with very little done to it, actually only a lighter flywheel has been done and the accord burns a bit of oil and i only stay about 1 car infront of it. i like the idea of the car but my heart lies with the 4g hatch, ive always wanted a rex though but i never thought it would be a 1g even with all the shit done to it i dont feel the "passion" if you will hahahah with this 1g. i go back and forth every day it seems so i dont know what will happen. Re: New toy
My main passion for the 1g/3g is their weights. They are an awesome platform to use if you are wanting as little weight as possible. I took my 86 Si, replaced the plastic fenders with metal(racing at a dirt track causes dents...much rather have dents than broken panels), put a roll cage in it, a Z6 engine with a 4g cable tranny and I still got the thing weighing in at 1520. At 1520, it was half the weight of the other main runners at my track, still had half the horsepower, but that is all it needed.
I learned a lot about them from redpepperracing, and got a ton of great ideas from there. I would check your panhard bar mount, that seems to be one of the main things that goes on these cars. But I would definitely keep it. I love FWD when it comes to snow and ice, I will take it over any other platform out there. Around here we don't have to worry about salt though, so that could make things different.
