Cherry is/was here on a british passport. Trust me, Cherry doesn't have the money for such a car. He did work for McLaren at one time. Was Wiernga's Sigma team manager. Gone now.
there's a lot more to this story but I'm not talking. If you ask Porche to convert a 959 to US spec, they will turn you away. It's who you know. Many years of good relations helps. Porsche had a performance mod which spun the twin turbos together instead of sequentially. Lauren, Stone, Henrick had this mod done at Hendrick's place in Hickory, NC. Combined with some other mods this put the HP at around 520-550 from 450. What bothers me (it's hard to choose) about Canepa is the aftermarket software and chips are almost never what the manufactures claim, often not close. the only reliable guru in the chip/mod business is Jim Conforti. No BS with Jim. Anyway, even the factory has problems. One unnamed 959 holed a piston during the first round of testing to US spec. #038 is William D. Kennedy, G&K did the "mods". |

There's some confusion about the mclaren(s) in Woodside, which is a town in the heart of the silicon valley in California (20 miles south of San Francisco).
Larry Ellison has several houses there. He keeps it in his hangar along with a couple of planes. I have seen it there and know the person he leases the premises from. In fact, his pilot has occasionally driven his McLaren F1. Mr. Ellison rarely drives his car, but he still has it. A venture capitalist named Seth Neiman working for Crosspoint Ventures also has a silver car. He drives it on dealer plates, so I am sure it has not been brought into compliance with S&D, etc. He keeps it in a place called the Candy Store, which is a private club with all sorts of gorgeous cars. He drives it fairly regularly. Here's the strangest one. I met this mechanic who owns a shop called Autobahn Specialties. He claims his brother used to date Larry Ellison's secretary and they made a lot of money off Oracle stock and that he had one. I didn't believe it till I found out that his brother had indeed shown it at the Hillsborough Concours a couple of years ago. He confirmed that the car was not in compliance and was kept in storage except for being driven to the show on dealer plates. He had bought it off some Hollywood producer who needed some quick cash. He dug up some pictures of the car, but it could have been any silver McLaren anywhere. I checked around and several people confirmed that his brother did own it. So I went back to Autobahn Specialties a few months later and this time I was told that he had sold it to a Tim Montgomery who made his fortune in some online mortgage company and now lives in Woodside. So this car may or may not exist and may or may not be in Woodside. Further, I know a very exclusive Ferrari mechanic who does no advertising. He has some wealthy clients with F40s, F50s, etc. And he says there's at least two I don't know about in Woodside. He won't reveal them to me either. So how does that change the list--can someone update it and post it, please? Thx, Faisal. |

updated list:
1. Herb Chambers - who lives in CT and owns a large chain of car dealers in MA and CT owns a silver F1. **Ameritech F1** (If someone wants to claim that he owns a black one, then they need to provide better evidence than the photo of him on his website next to the silver one - www.herbchambers.com ) 2. Carl Beal - who lives in Midland, Texas owns a large financial company owns a silver F1 (#042) that was lent to Road and Track a few years ago for a top-speed shootout. It has also been seen @ his second residency in Aspen, CO. License plate: M LAREN **Ameritech F1** 3. Rapper Wyclef Jean - owns an F1 road car - #022 (NOT LEGALLY HERE) 4. Jay Leno - owns chassis #015, a black F1 with red stripe on the ventline of the door. ** Fritz's Amerispec (JK Technologies) EPA certificate** 5. Dan Kennedy - a financial advisor in Scottsdale - started www.vstore.com and www.vcommerce.com - owns the F1 road car - #037 originally delivered in "Special Silver" but painted at his request by the factory to mimic the "Yquem" color of the last road car #075 - he calls the color "Kandy Orange". It is currently for sale - www.mclarenforsale.com 6. Larry Ellison - the CEO of Oracle owns a Silver F1 #064. Larry Ellison has several houses there. He keeps it in his hangar along with a couple of planes. I have seen it there a 360 Modena and 911 Turbo in the garage. It was wearing a CA Dealer plate in the photos. The house is not Larry Blairs, it belongs to a friend -448 Quail Run Drive. Fremont California. Between San Jose and Oakland 8. Ralph Lauren definatley owns 2 Mclaren F1’s - probably both **Ameritech F1's** (could really use more details or any photos of these two cars....) 9. Frank Selldorff, who drives a Turner Motorsports BMW in the Speedvision World Challenge series, owns three Mclaren's. He has two normal F1s here in the States and an LM that he keeps in England. Chassis’ #’s: 07 (Resides in MA) and 068, LM chassis # unknown (I don't believe that #68 is here in the states - possibly drewwtms from Turner can confirm??) 10. Bruce Canepa - former IMSA driver and owner of Canepa Designs - www.canepa.com - owns a titanium F1 road car. This is the Santa Cruz, California car. (Just to clarify - the "mickey mouse" ECU setup for the 959 was co-developed by GIAC - http://www.giacusa.com/porsche_959.htm - who is a very respected ECU tuner. Anyway, if it makes the cars legal then who cares...) 11. Elon Musk - former CEO of PayPal.com and Zip2.com, who is now working on his own private Mars exploration project owns a Silver F1 (poss #045 or #067) which he crashed, but had repaired by the factory. **Ameritech F1** (Anyone know exactly which car Petrik sold to Musk? It seems that based on original color of "Magnesium Silver" that #067 would be the correct one) 12. A black F1 resides somewhere in the Dallas area (I have heard about this car in a few places. Anymore info or some photos would be great. Also, see #20 on this list below) 13. Lawrence Strohl, former CEO of Tommy Hilfiger, owns the Mont Tremblant race circuit in Canada and a McLaren F1 - This car is Dark Silver. (Anyone know if this would be Petrik's other car #045?? It seems to match the photos I have of that car.) 14. A F1 GTR resides at the BMW museum in Spartanburg, SC. It's one of the FINA cars - it wears #39. It has also been seen at Prototype Technologies Group locating in Winchester, VA which is BMW's U.S. Motorsports research and development company owned by Tom Milner. They fielded the M3 GTR's in the American LeMans series over the past few years. It's possible that the F1 GTR belongs to him or to PTG and is loaned to the BMW Museum in Spartanburg, SC. It's also possible that PTG was simply servicing the car for BMW (I'm not sure if this car is still in the US - anyone, anyone?? Bueller??) 15. Possibly 4 Mclarens in Woodside, 1. “Further, I know a very exclusive Ferrari mechanic who does no advertising. He has some wealthy clients with F40s, F50s, etc. And he says there's at least two I don't know about in Woodside. He won't reveal them to me either.” (THAT’S 2 MORE UNIDENTIFIED MCLARENS IN WOODSIDE 2. 3. Look @ #6 The oddballs: 15. There is a silver McLaren that has been spotted recently on the streets of LA near Beverly Hills. My roommate saw it and a member of the Corvette Forums also saw it and took two pictures. (Could possibly have been Musk's car?? - had CA plates. Might be a duplicate of another??...) 16. 1 in Woodside, California, CA. (MAY NOT BE IN THE US YET!) (Does this refer to the Red car coming through Los Gatos from Japan?? or Larry Ellisons's car?? He lives in Woodside so I am told.) 17. Motorcars International currently has another titanium gray F1 in stock. (This car is most likely the same car that sat in the showroom of Newport Autosport for so long. I would not be surprised if it's the car that now belongs to Bruce Canepa though I can't confirm this. Anyone have more info??) 18. Motorcars Intl advertised for sale #072 - a Black F1 road car with the LM-Kit a few years back. After that the car was seen displayed at the Blackhawk Museum in Danville, CA but has since been removed and apparently will not be returning according to museum staff. This car used to belong to someone with the last name Gonzalez. He was the son of the founder of CommerceOne. He passed away due to stomach cancer and his eulogy was at the Blackhawk museum. The car was then displayed there for a couple of months or so. It was a well used example with lots of stone chips, scrapes and dents. It was a road going car with the high downforce package. Present whereabouts unknown, but I have heard it is still with the Gonzalez family. There were two sons, and they were known for taking this car out to Nevada and "exercising it" against superbikes. |
